About The Position

Portland Parks & Recreation is hiring Certified Fitness Instructors for part-time, year-round jobs in the Recreation Division. This is a talent pool to collect names of interested individuals for future part-time or seasonal positions. The roles involve general fitness and wellness instruction, either through group classes or personal training, at Portland Parks & Recreation Community Centers and Schools Uniting Neighborhood (SUN) Community School Programs. The target audience includes individuals of varying abilities, ages, and fitness levels seeking overall health improvement. These roles are not for sports-specific instructors or coaches. Portland Parks & Recreation operates multiple community centers offering drop-in fitness classes, registered activities, and personal training. SUN programs also offer drop-in fitness classes. Lifelong and Adaptive programming includes virtual options. TeenForce programming is available at community centers during weekday afternoons.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Ability to promote a welcoming and friendly atmosphere.
  • General knowledge of assigned recreation area.
  • Ability and experience in building good relationships and communicating respectfully with a diverse team of recreation staff, city workers, and program participants.
  • Ability and experience in noticing, stopping, and handling safety and emergency situations.
  • Ability to problem-solve and respond to customer concerns.
  • Ability to learn and show skills, or experience, in one-on-one and small group Personal Training.
  • Ability to learn and show skills, or experience, in teaching different types of Group Exercise classes like 32-count block, Tabata or HIIT, and mind/body classes like Yoga and Pilates.
  • One year of teaching experience.
  • One certification from one of these approved organizations: ACSM, ACE, AFAA, NSCA, NCSF, ISSA, NESTA, NASM, PCC Fitness Technology Degree, Cooper Institute Certification, Four-year college degree in a fitness related field (e.g., Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology), or any accredited certification distributed by NCCA.
  • For Personal Training: Approved degree or certification as outlined above AND one year of personal training experience AND personal training certification from a bureau recognized organization.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of teaching experience is preferred for Group Exercise.
  • One year of personal training experience is required for Personal Trainer.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct and/or monitor classes/activities in the area of assignment.
  • Develop lesson plans related to the area of assignment based upon overall program objectives and guidelines.
  • Prepare materials for instruction of classes/activities.
  • Record participation for classes/activities.
  • Request class/activity supplies.
  • Perform duties related to customer service, cross marketing, and delivery of assigned activities.
  • Take care of fitness equipment and do yearly maintenance.
  • Use best practices for health and wellness marketing and promoting fitness memberships.
