About The Position

Portland Parks & Recreation is hiring for Inclusion Services, offering part-time, flexible, and meaningful employment. Inclusion services support individuals with disabilities, both visible and hidden, to participate in recreation activities across Portland. The program offers various schedules including Pre-School, SUN Schools/Afterschool Programs, Classes, Events/Trips, and Day Camps. This job posting is for several positions classified as Parks Activities Specialists. Applicants will be contacted when positions become available, and there are no set interview or hiring dates. The job is casual, part-time, with flexible hours that may include days, evenings, weekends, or holidays, and the number of hours can vary weekly. These jobs are located in different areas around Portland, and applicants can select multiple desired work areas. Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a positive and supportive attitude toward individuals with disabilities.
  • Be able to talk and listen well with different kinds of people.
  • Be able to spot and handle safety and emergency situations.
  • Work well in a team and build positive relationships with staff, volunteers, and customers.
  • Have knowledge of behavior modification techniques and use positive reinforcement.
  • Must have a minimum score of 3.5 or better on the EIPA (Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment), NAD (National Association of the Deaf) certification, are nationally certified by RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf), and/or have two (2) to three (3) years ASL or related interpreting experience.

Responsibilities

  • Directly support one or two individuals to provide assistance to participants of all ages with physical, developmental and/or emotional disabilities as they integrate into general recreation programs.
  • Adapt activities to ensure participant success.
  • Maintain a safe environment for participants.
  • Communicate clearly with families/caregivers, Community Center staff, and the Inclusion Services coordinator.
  • Provide integrated ASL interpretation support for participation in activities and engaging in social interaction with other participants, staff, and the environment.
  • Interpret accurately from spoken English to ASL and from ASL to spoken English.
  • Describe sounds and reactions experienced during the activity.
  • Perform primary duties in the field at camps, classes, and outings at PP&R facilities, public spaces, and nature settings.
