About The Position

Portland Parks & Recreation is hiring for the Lifelong and Adaptive Recreation team and is collecting names of people interested in future part-time or seasonal jobs. This is a talent pool to identify candidates for potential future vacancies. When jobs open, selected candidates will be contacted for an interview. The program focuses on ensuring access to recreational, educational, and wellness opportunities for adults age 60+ and people with disabilities, offering programs such as excursions, van trips, health and wellness, cooking, arts and crafts, music and dance, sports, fitness, and hiking. Roles may involve leading van trips/excursions, teaching classes on-site at Community Centers or virtually, and facilitating online programs. This posting is for several positions classified as either Recreation Associates or Parks Activities Specialists.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Be able to create a welcoming and friendly environment.
  • Know about the activities in your assigned area.
  • Be able to talk and listen well with different kinds of people.
  • Be able to spot and handle safety and emergency situations.
  • Be able to solve problems and help with customer concerns.
  • Submit a DMV drivers record to drive City vehicles (for Lead Counselor - Trip Leader).
  • Provide your own transportation (for Counselors for 'Meet us There' trips).
  • Be able to walk 2 to 6 miles per outing (for Counselors for 'Meet us There' trips).
  • Be able to navigate Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Google Meet (for virtual instructors).

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual preferred (for Lead Counselor - Trip Leader).

Responsibilities

  • Lead van trips/excursions.
  • Teach classes on site at Community Centers or satellite facilities and/or virtually using an online platform.
  • Help facilitate virtual programs using an online platform.
  • Assist with Lifelong and Adaptive Recreation programs, following guidance from Lead Counselors and Recreation Coordinators.
  • Lead a variety of van trips and outings that include tours, hikes, meals, and social engagement.
  • Support the physical, social, and emotional well-being of participants.
  • Maintain schedules, safety of participants and volunteers, and accurate program records.
  • Provide customer service to participants during a variety of outings/excursions for older adults or people with disabilities.
  • Assist with balancing participants while getting in and out of bus/van or at different activity venues.
  • Transport registered participants via minibus or 15-passenger van to tours/shows/activities.
  • Meet at the location of trips within the Portland Metro Area for 'Meet us There' trips.
  • Walk 2 to 6 miles per outing for hiking programs.
  • Transport registered participants via minibus or 15-passenger van to trailheads and lead the group on hikes.
  • Prepare and present introductory lessons/activities for programs and classes.
  • Create a welcoming atmosphere, engage with participants, and provide excellent customer service.
  • Maintain clean facilities and/or park spaces, monitor use of space and needs of guests.
  • Address potential safety concerns proactively.
  • Uphold the PP&R code of conduct.
  • Communicate with supervisor, rangers, and security under established guidelines.
  • Monitor participation and complete needed paperwork and record keeping.
  • Lead classes in a wide range of interests, including lesson planning, class content, and instruction for general recreation activities such as art, music, cooking, movement, dance, tumbling, gymnastics, and sports.
  • Instruct others on how to navigate and use virtual platforms like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Google Meet.
  • Provide on-site assistance to participants of all ages with physical, developmental and/or emotional disabilities as they integrate into general recreation programs.
  • Adapt activities, follow inclusion or behavior plans, maintain a safe environment, and promote a participant’s success in a program.
  • Work with people with intellectual disabilities (IDD) who are over 50 years old in a community-based program.
  • Aid participants living with a disability as they learn skills to integrate into retirement.
  • Follow individual service plans.
  • Eat meals with participants.
  • Aid in toileting.
  • Complete daily documentation on individuals meeting state requirements.
  • Communicate with caregivers, families, and Recreation Coordinator.
