About The Position

The City of Carson is seeking applications for Receptionist/Switchboard Operator positions. This recruitment will remain open until vacancies are filled and may close without notice. Applications will be reviewed weekly. The ideal candidate must be able to handle a high volume of calls from the public, operate a central multi-line telephone switchboard quickly, and perform general clerical duties. The ideal candidate must also be willing to engage with the public and direct calls to the appropriate departments. Candidates with open availability, including weekends, are strongly preferred. This is a Part-Time, entry-level position, limited to no more than 960 hours per fiscal year. Under general supervision, this role serves as a receptionist and central telephone switchboard operator, and performs general clerical work, providing clerical support to management, supervisory, and/or professional staff.

Requirements

  • Completion of formal education sufficient to ensure the ability to read, write and perform arithmetic calculations at the level required for successful job performance.
  • Some experience performing general clerical work.
  • Typing at a speed of no less than 40 words per minute from clear copy.
  • Ability to learn assigned office tasks.
  • Ability to learn the operation of standard office machines including telephone switchboard and computer.
  • Ability to learn receptionist and telephone techniques.
  • Ability to use correct English.
  • Ability to perform arithmetic computations.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Ability to index and alphabetize accurately.
  • Ability to meet approved minimal physical and medical standards.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and deal tactfully with the public.
  • Must submit original certification of the ability to type at a rate of at least 40 net wpm with application.

Responsibilities
