Summer Internship - Radio Frequency Engineer

Type One Energy•Madison, WI
•$25 - $30

About The Position

As a Radio Frequency Engineering Intern, you will contribute to the design and development of electromagnetic systems and components for fusion energy projects. Working alongside experienced engineers and physicists, you will gain hands-on experience with a complex radio frequency project, using electromagnetic analysis tools such as ANSYS or COMSOL Multiphysics for 3D modeling and learning about the technical challenges and trade-offs involved in RF design and development in a research and development environment. The position is based in Madison, Wisconsin, pays $25–$30 per hour for 40 hours per week, and is a 12-week summer 2027 contract beginning May 24, 2027. The intern reports to the Senior RF Engineer. Type One Energy develops an optimized stellarator fusion energy system using advanced manufacturing methods, computational physics, and high-field superconducting magnets. Its FusionDirect development program aims to pursue a low-risk, short-schedule path to a fusion power plant through a partner-intensive and capital-efficient strategy.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in Electrical Engineering or Radio Frequency Engineering.
  • Strong understanding of RF design fundamentals and principles.
  • Coursework or project experience with electromagnetic modeling using Ansys, COMSOL, AWR, or an equivalent solver.
  • Ability to critically evaluate simulation results, including checking mesh convergence and the reasonableness of boundary conditions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and solid problem-solving skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Scripting experience with Python, MATLAB, or an equivalent language to automate or post-process simulation runs.
  • Familiarity with Electron Cyclotron Heating (ECH) principles for plasma.

Responsibilities

  • Design RF and optical components using tools such as COMSOL and ANSYS.
  • Develop understanding of RF performance using analytical and numerical solutions.
  • Provide trade-off estimates using MATLAB, Python, or an equivalent language.
  • Measure component RF performance using Vector Network Analyzers.
  • Assess multiphysics interactions, such as plasma absorption characteristics or RF-based heating.
  • Contribute to design reviews and documentation to support accuracy and manufacturability.
  • Correlate analysis results with hand calculations, test data, or prototype inspection results.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and systems engineers on development projects.
  • Participate in prototype fabrication, inspection, and testing as needed.
