Summer Internship - Radio Frequency Engineer

Type One Energy Group•Madison, WI
•Onsite

About The Position

As a Radio Frequency Engineering Intern, you will contribute to the design and development of electromagnetic (EM) systems and components for fusion energy projects. Working alongside experienced engineers and physicists, you will gain hands-on experience on a complex RF project, using EM analysis tools such as ANSYS or COMSOL Multiphysics for 3D modeling and learning about the technical challenges and trade-offs involved in RF design and development in an R&D environment. The position is based in Madison, Wisconsin, pays $25–$30 per hour, and is a 12-week summer contract beginning May 24, 2027. It is a 40-hour-per-week internship reporting to the Sr. RF Engineer.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Radio Frequency Engineering.
  • Strong understanding of RF design fundamentals and principles.
  • Coursework or project experience with EM modeling using Ansys, COMSOL, AWR, or an equivalent solver.
  • Ability to critically evaluate simulation results, including checking mesh convergence and the reasonableness of boundary conditions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and solid problem-solving skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Scripting experience with Python, MATLAB, or an equivalent language to automate or post-process simulation runs.
  • Familiarity with Electron Cyclotron Heating (ECH) principles for plasma.

Responsibilities

  • Design RF and optical components using tools such as COMSOL and ANSYS.
  • Develop understanding of RF performance using analytical and numerical solutions.
  • Provide trade-off estimations using MATLAB, Python, or an equivalent language.
  • Measure RF performance of components using Vector Network Analyzers.
  • Assess multiphysics interactions, such as plasma absorption characteristics or RF-based heating.
  • Contribute to design reviews and documentation to support accuracy and manufacturability.
  • Correlate analysis results with hand calculations, test data, or prototype inspection results.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and systems engineers to support development projects.
  • Participate in prototype fabrication, inspection, and testing as needed.
