About The Position

Join the Competition Services team at The Highlands at Harbor Springs and help create an exciting, safe, and memorable ski racing experience for our guests. The Race Operations Crew Member is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining our NASTAR (National Standard Race) giant slalom course. This position is ideal for an advanced to expert skier who enjoys being outdoors, working as part of a team, and sharing their passion for skiing with guests. The successful candidate will help maintain a safe, race-ready course, operate timing and race equipment, assist guests, and serve as a pace setter to establish daily race benchmarks.

Requirements

  • Advanced/Expert Skiing Ability: Must demonstrate strong alpine skiing skills and successfully pass an on-snow ski assessment.
  • Physical Stamina: Must be able to remain active outdoors and ski for extended periods throughout the workday.
  • Physical Strength: Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks such as shoveling and course maintenance.
  • Technology Skills: Basic computer literacy and the ability to learn and operate race timing and registration systems.
  • Availability: Must be available for early mornings, weekends, holidays, and varying weather conditions.
  • Guest Service: Strong interpersonal skills and a positive, team-oriented attitude.

Nice To Haves

  • Racing Experience: Prior alpine racing, NASTAR, ski racing, or ski industry experience is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and prepare the NASTAR giant slalom course each day.
  • Drill and set race gates, install safety fencing, and position electronic timing equipment.
  • Inspect the course and equipment to ensure a safe and race-ready environment.
  • Operate start gates and electronic timing systems during race operations.
  • Track racer bib numbers and maintain accurate race and timing information.
  • Ski the course at a high, consistent level to establish the daily zero-handicap time.
  • Maintain consistent technique, line, and speed while pace setting.
  • Adjust skiing and course approach as conditions change throughout the day.
  • Maintain the race surface throughout the day through side-slipping, shoveling, and other snow-management techniques.
  • Reset or adjust gates as needed to maintain proper course alignment and safe skiing conditions.
  • Monitor changing snow and weather conditions and communicate concerns to the Competition Services team.
  • Assist with opening and closing procedures for the race course.
  • Provide friendly, professional service to racers and their families.
  • Assist guests of all ages and ability levels with registration, race procedures, rules, and results.
  • Answer guest questions and help create a positive, welcoming race experience.
  • Promote safe skiing practices and follow all resort and Competition Services policies.
