R&D Mechanical Engineer - Medium Voltage

Industrial Electric Manufacturing•Franklin, TN

About The Position

The R&D Mechanical Engineer - Medium Voltage collaborates with or leads the design, testing, and certification of innovative electrical power products alongside electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing engineers. The role requires a strong grasp of fundamental engineering concepts across multiple disciplines and the ability to manage product development with limited direction. The position is based in Franklin, Tennessee, or Tualatin, Oregon, and reports to the Sr R&D Manager-MV. The engineer leads new product development projects from initiation through production implementation and ensures assigned New Product Introduction engineering work is executed. Responsibilities include developing specifications, drawings, 3D models, bills of material, and standards-based test plans; coordinating product evaluation and certification with NRTLs; supporting laboratory testing; evaluating results and improving designs; and working with manufacturing engineering on design for manufacturability. The position may require travel up to 20% for testing and other product-development work.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of experience designing low- and/or medium-voltage power distribution equipment or related products.
  • BSME or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with NRTL (UL, CSA, etc.) evaluation, testing, and certification processes.
  • Experience with common electrical equipment standards, such as UL 891, UL 1558, UL 508A, and IEEE C37.20.2.
  • Strong grasp of three-phase electric power concepts, power distribution systems, and power control and protection strategies is preferred.
  • Excellent communication and technical writing skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to work as a team player.
  • Strong organizational skills and precise attention to detail.

Nice To Haves

  • Design experience using SolidWorks to produce 3D models is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as project leader for new product development projects from initiation through production implementation.
  • Ensure execution and implementation of New Product Introduction engineering work for assigned projects.
  • Collaborate with Senior and Lead Engineers, Sales, and other stakeholders to write detailed engineering specifications and develop concept drawings.
  • Coordinate with Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTLs) to define product evaluation and certification scope.
  • Create detailed design drawings, 3D models, and bills of material for prototype equipment and test articles.
  • Develop and document test plans according to relevant standards.
  • Support testing at in-house and third-party laboratories, including travel of up to 20%.
  • Evaluate test results and revise designs based on empirical data and established engineering concepts.
  • Characterize electrical, thermal, and mechanical performance of design elements through testing, simulation, and/or analytical methods.
  • Develop standard design criteria and models.
  • Work with manufacturing engineering to implement Design for Manufacturability (DFM) concepts throughout new product development.
  • Work with Mechanical Designers to conduct failure analyses of existing products and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
