R&D Mechanical Engineer - Medium Voltage

Industrial Electric Manufacturing•Tualatin, OR

About The Position

The R&D Mechanical Engineer - Medium Voltage collaborates with or leads the design, testing, and certification of innovative electrical power products. Working with electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing engineers, the role applies engineering concepts across disciplines and manages product development under limited direction. The position is based in Franklin, Tennessee, or Tualatin, Oregon, and reports to the Sr R&D Manager-MV. The engineer leads new product development projects from initiation through production implementation and ensures execution of assigned NPI engineering work. Responsibilities include defining specifications and concepts with senior and lead engineers, Sales, and other stakeholders; coordinating evaluation and certification with NRTLs; producing design drawings, 3D models, and bills of material; and developing and documenting standards-based test plans. The engineer supports in-house and third-party testing, evaluates results, and revises designs based on test data and engineering principles. Travel of up to 20% is required to support testing and other product development tasks in person. The role also characterizes electrical, thermal, and mechanical performance through testing, simulation, or analysis; develops standard design criteria and models; works with manufacturing engineering on design for manufacturability; and conducts failure analyses of existing products to identify continuous-improvement opportunities.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience designing low- and/or medium-voltage power distribution equipment or related products.
  • BSME or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with NRTL evaluation, testing, and certification processes, such as UL or CSA.
  • Experience with common electrical equipment standards, such as UL 891, 1558, and 508A, and IEEE C37.20.2.
  • Strong technical capability and a solid grasp of three-phase electric power concepts, power distribution systems, and power control and protection strategies are preferred.
  • Excellent communication and technical writing skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to work as a team player.
  • Strong organizational skills and precise attention to detail.

Nice To Haves

  • Design experience using SolidWorks to produce 3D models is highly preferred.
  • Solid grasp of three-phase electric power concepts, power distribution systems, and power control and protection strategies is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as project leader for new product development projects from initiation through production implementation.
  • Ensure execution and implementation of NPI engineering work for assigned projects.
  • Collaborate with senior and lead engineers, Sales, and other stakeholders to write engineering specifications and develop concept drawings.
  • Coordinate with NRTLs to define product evaluation and certification scope.
  • Create detailed design drawings, 3D models, and bills of material for prototype equipment and test articles.
  • Develop and document test plans according to relevant standards, including tests such as temperature rise, dielectric and BIL, short-circuit and withstand current, mechanical endurance, component failure, environmental, functional, and seismic shake-table tests.
  • Support testing at in-house and third-party laboratories; travel in person as needed for testing and other product development tasks.
  • Evaluate test results and revise designs using empirical data and established engineering concepts.
  • Characterize electrical, thermal, and mechanical performance through testing, simulation, and/or analytical methods; develop standard design criteria and models.
  • Work with manufacturing engineering to apply design-for-manufacturability concepts throughout product development.
  • Work with mechanical designers.
  • Conduct failure analyses of existing products and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
