R&D Mechanical Engineer

LED FastStart•Ruston, LA

About The Position

Radiance Technologies is seeking an R&D Mechanical Engineer to support ongoing programs within the Scientific and Technical Intelligence Group. The role designs, develops, and integrates mechanical and thermal systems for circuit card mechanical assemblies and supporting technologies, and uses first principles to analyze complex problems. The engineer contributes to complex projects as part of a multidisciplinary team and prepares technical documentation. This is a hands-on laboratory position involving close collaboration with electrical engineers, computer engineers, and technicians to design, build, and test microelectronics solutions and their physical support systems. Work includes mechanical and thermal design and analysis, prototype and low-rate production builds, and failure analysis. Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain a security clearance.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.2 out of 4.0, listed on the résumé.
  • At least 2 years of mechanical engineering experience in a laboratory, R&D, test, prototyping, or experimental environment; a master’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering may substitute for the experience.
  • Self-motivation and ability to work effectively within an R&D team.
  • Demonstrated hands-on prototyping experience through activities such as design/build/fly, Formula SAE, CubeSat, or similar organizations or events.
  • Experience with CAD software such as SolidWorks, Fusion 360, CATIA, NX, or similar packages.
  • Proficiency in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), tolerance stack-ups, and design for manufacturing.
  • Experience with heat-transfer mechanics and thermal systems, preferably in electrical systems.
  • Experience with standard electrical laboratory equipment, including oscilloscopes, function generators, multimeters, and power supplies.
  • Experience creating engineering drawings, CAD models, bills of materials (BOMs), and fabrication documentation.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • Machine-shop or hands-on fabrication experience, including lathes, mills, or 3D printers.
  • Experience with multiphysics analysis tools such as COMSOL or PLECS.
  • Experience with high-voltage engineering, circuit card mechanical assemblies, pulsed power, prime power, power electronics, RF, or antenna development.
  • Experience integrating PCBs, connectors, cabling, thermal components, and mechanical structures.
  • Experience with VPX, chassis, card guides, cold plates, heat spreaders, or conduction-cooled electronics.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and integrate mechanical and thermal systems for circuit card mechanical assemblies and supporting technologies.
  • Analyze complex problems using first principles.
  • Contribute to complex engineering projects as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Produce technical documentation for assigned projects.
  • Design, build, and test microelectronics solutions and their physical support systems in a laboratory setting.
  • Perform mechanical and thermal design and analysis.
  • Support prototype and low-rate production builds.
  • Conduct failure analysis.
