About The Position

PowerTec Distribution & Motor Control Corporation is seeking a Quality Engineer to own product quality for medium-voltage (MV) switchgear and motor control centers (MCCs), as well as low-voltage (LV) switchgear and MCCs. The role covers the full process from incoming components through factory testing and shipment, ensuring each lineup complies with applicable UL and IEEE/ANSI standards, customer specifications, and approved drawings, and ships with a complete quality record. The Quality Engineer develops inspection and test plans, leads factory acceptance and customer witness testing, inspects in-process and finished equipment, and manages nonconformance and corrective action processes. The position also oversees incoming-material quality, calibration, quality records and procedures, UL follow-up inspections, and investigations of field issues and warranty returns. Work is based on the production floor and test bay, with office time for documentation and occasional overnight travel to supplier plants and customer sites, up to 15%.

Requirements

  • Significant hands-on experience inspecting, testing, and documenting quality for MV switchgear, MV MCCs, LV switchgear, and LV MCCs.
  • Working knowledge of UL 891, UL 845, UL 1558, UL 347, and IEEE C37.20.1 and C37.20.2.
  • Hands-on experience with hipot, insulation resistance, micro-ohm, and primary and secondary injection testing.
  • Follow NFPA 70E for energized work.
  • Familiarity with breakers, protective relays, and motor starters from manufacturers such as Eaton, Powell, ABB, Siemens, Schneider Electric, and SEL.
  • Fluency in reading schematics, wiring diagrams, one-line diagrams, and assembly drawings.
  • Disciplined root-cause and corrective-action skills, and ability to prepare clear test reports suitable for customer review.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 5 years of quality, test, or manufacturing engineering experience involving MV and LV switchgear and MCCs.
  • Ability to travel overnight occasionally to supplier plants and customer job sites for source inspections and field issues, up to 15%.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods; kneel, crouch, and climb to inspect equipment interiors; lift and position test equipment up to 50 lbs; and wear required PPE, including arc-rated PPE during energized testing.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the large industrial electrical equipment industry, such as with a switchgear or MCC manufacturer or in field testing.
  • ASQ CQE certification, NETA certification, or Six Sigma Green Belt.

Responsibilities

  • Write inspection and test plans (ITPs) for each lineup using customer specifications and approved drawings.
  • Lead factory acceptance testing (FAT) and customer witness tests, including dielectric (hipot), insulation resistance, contact resistance, breaker operation, CT polarity and ratio, and control-circuit functional tests.
  • Inspect in-process and finished equipment, including bus torque, clearances, wiring against drawings, labeling, and nameplates.
  • Manage nonconformance (NCR) and corrective action (CAPA) processes using 8D and 5-Why root-cause methods, and verify that corrective actions are effective.
  • Inspect incoming material and manage supplier nonconformances with Supply Chain; perform source inspections when needed.
  • Compile quality turnover packages for each lineup, including test reports, inspection records, calibration certificates, and as-built records.
