About The Position

RELA Language Professionals is seeking qualified Medical & Community Bilingual Interpreters for an on-site, independent contractor position. This role is part-time, flexible, and on-call, focusing on revolutionizing language access by cultivating a supportive community for interpreters. RELA emphasizes continuous learning, professional development, and a family-like network, aiming to set new standards in healthcare interpretation across over 80 languages. The position involves facilitating accurate communication, ensuring comprehension, managing specialized terminology, handling sensitive situations professionally, and documenting services. RELA is actively recruiting interpreters for all languages, with a particular demand for Spanish and Portuguese. Other languages in reasonable to high demand include Arabic (all dialects), ASL, Armenian, Bosnian, Burmese, Cambodian (Khmer), Cantonese, Chuuckese, Croatian, Dari, Farsi, Pashto, French (Especially African Dialects), Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Karen, Kinyarwanda, Kirundi, Korean, Kurdish, Laotian, Mandarin, Marshallese, Nepali, Punjabi, Russian, Samoan, Serbian, Somali, Sudanese, Swahili, Taiwanese, Thai, Tigrinya, Tongan, Turkish, Turkmen, Ukrainian, Urdu, Vietnamese, and Zulu. The company encourages applications from individuals speaking any language not listed. Interpretation requests are primarily on weekdays between 7 AM and 7 PM, with additional opportunities for weekend, evening, night, and holiday assignments. The job description also outlines typical quoted rates for Spanish/Portuguese interpreters based on experience and certification, with additional rates for other languages, specialty assignments, after-hours coverage, and potential reimbursement for travel time or mileage. RELA offers new interpreter and client referral incentives, as well as professional development incentives.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent
Certificate from a nationally accredited 40-hour interpreter training program (e.g., Bridging the Gap, The Community Interpreter International, Cross Cultural Health Care Program, or other CCHI or NBCMI recognized programs)
Fluency in English and target language(s)
Strong medical terminology knowledge in both languages
Interpreters must demonstrate professional proficiency in each working language, including English, via one of the following: High School Diploma or College Degree where the working language is the primary language of instruction (diploma/degree must be provided), ACTFL: Advanced-Mid or higher, ALTA: Score of 9 (Advanced High) or higher on the 1–12 scale, ILR/Government: Level 2+ (Limited Working Proficiency Plus) or higher.
