About The Position

The QA (NSIS) Supervisor is responsible for directing the workforce to achieve facility safety, food safety, and quality goals. Reporting directly to the QA Superintendent, this position supervises Food Safety and Quality Assurance (FSQA) personnel and oversees quality and food safety aspects of production at the Ottumwa, Iowa facility. The role manages FSQA programs and procedures, production-related quality checks, sanitation verification, employee scheduling and performance, and continuous improvement initiatives. The position is exempt and involves working in a production setting for 40 or more hours per week, including most weekends.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent required.
Extensive knowledge and technical skill in a variety of QA and production jobs, including supervisory positions.

Nice To Haves

Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Meat Science, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology Engineering, Food Engineering, or a related field.
Relevant professional experience, training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the preferred degree.

Responsibilities

Direct the workforce to achieve safety, food safety, and quality goals set by facility management.
Coordinate FSQA team activities to implement quality and food safety programs and procedures, including HACCP and SSOP.
Investigate plant quality assurance and food safety processes and recommend process-improvement projects and tasks.
Promote continuous improvement in operating processes and procedures and encourage hourly team members to take ownership of processes.
Conduct microbial research and development testing and sample finished products and raw materials for bacteria.
Minimize customer claims through engineering controls; monitor products and procedures against company, customer, and government specifications and take corrective action as needed.
Coordinate and supervise pre-operation sanitation, verifying the cleanliness and sanitation of equipment and facilities daily.
Identify workplace hazards and develop solutions to improve employee safety.
Manage labor to a zero budget and seek cost reductions, including through elimination of foreign material.
Complete daily production plans by scheduling and assigning employees, prioritizing and monitoring work, revising schedules, resolving problems, and reporting results in end-of-shift summaries.
Manage hourly employees’ time cards and vacation requests to ensure accurate pay.
Support employee retention and maintain working relationships with production supervision, USDA personnel, and employees.
Ensure production employees comply with food safety, human resources, and safety policies.
Resolve product and employee issues as they arise and communicate with USDA inspectors about products, employees, and safety.
Ensure compliance with the HACCP plan for all products.
Establish and maintain shelf-life requirements, finished-product specifications, leaker testing, formulation weights, temperatures, and other required standards.
Direct, motivate, and monitor QA employees; interview and hire new employees and evaluate current employees’ performance.
Monitor production employees’ procedures, safety, and cleanliness.
Test new equipment for quality aspects.
Lead product shows and conference calls when the superintendent is absent.
Manage the cold-chain temperature-logging program.
