The Greenager Program is a youth stewardship and leadership program run by the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department and the Port of San Francisco. It gives teens opportunities to improve the City’s green spaces, raise awareness, and create place-based projects connected to issues or themes they value. The program is for students in grades 9–11 who live in or attend school in the Tenderloin, Northeast, or Southeast neighborhoods, with other San Francisco students potentially eligible. Participants receive training and leadership opportunities, lead public volunteer service projects, participate in community events, and take part in team excursions. First-Year Greenagers learn habitat restoration, take part in environmental education, work with volunteers, present a community research project, and learn to lead volunteer days. Second-Year Greenagers are program graduates who complete daily program summaries, plan a project day, provide staff feedback, mentor First-Year participants, evaluate their mentees, and lead activities such as icebreakers, restoration, and environmental education. This is a temporary, exempt, as-needed seasonal appointment and does not create eligibility for a permanent civil service position. Employees serve at the will of the Appointing Officer. Compensation is $25.00 per hour. Applicants must submit both an online application and a Supplemental Questionnaire. Previous Greenager graduates applying for Second-Year positions must also submit a cover letter by the stated deadline.
