About The Position

Harmony United Psychiatric Care offers a voluntary, unpaid Psychiatric Office Assistant internship at its Winter Garden outpatient clinic. The program is intended for people transitioning into healthcare or entry-level candidates without prior medical experience. It provides foundational, hands-on exposure to medical office operations in behavioral and mental health care, along with training, mentorship, and practical skills. There are no fees for participation, and interns do not receive wages or other financial compensation. The program lasts 3 to 6 months and requires 600 total internship hours to qualify for completion and a Certificate of Completion documenting hours served and skills learned. The schedule is flexible, with a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week and full office days of 10 hours. Training begins with orientation and HIPAA/confidentiality instruction, followed by front-desk observation and shadowing, then supervised hands-on practice in psychiatric outpatient office tasks. Participants receive an assigned supervisor, weekly feedback and progress check-ins, real-time guidance, and a structured checklist to track learning milestones. Successful participants also receive a reference letter and may include the experience on their resumes. Applicants must be at least 18, have graduated from high school, be able to commit to a consistent schedule, pass a basic screening such as a background check, and be motivated to gain healthcare experience. No prior healthcare or office experience is required. The clinic enforces a drug-free workplace policy, including pre-joining screening and random drug testing.
