About The Position

Vertical Mechanical Group (VMG), an HVAC and plumbing contractor, is seeking a motivated Project Engineer Intern to gain hands-on experience with commercial mechanical construction projects. The intern will work alongside Project Managers, Project Engineers, Superintendents, and field teams, developing skills in project coordination, construction management, and mechanical systems. The internship is intended for a student or recent graduate interested in construction management, engineering, or mechanical construction.

This is an in-office internship at VMG's headquarters in Reston, Virginia, with opportunities to visit project sites throughout the DMV area. The paid internship offers $25.00 per hour and exposure to commercial HVAC and plumbing work, from preconstruction through project closeout.

Requirements

• Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field.
• Interest in commercial construction, HVAC, plumbing, or mechanical systems.
• Basic ability to read construction drawings and specifications, or willingness to learn.
• Strong organizational and time management skills.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Willingness to learn, ask questions, take initiative, and gain hands-on industry experience.

• Previous construction experience.

Responsibilities

• Assist with project planning, scheduling, and coordination.
• Support Project Managers and Project Engineers with day-to-day project activities.
• Gain exposure to HVAC and plumbing drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
• Assist with RFIs, submittals, change orders, procurement, and project documentation.
• Help track project progress, schedules, and action items.
• Coordinate with project teams, field personnel, subcontractors, and vendors as needed.
• Participate in project meetings and site visits.
• Assist with maintaining organized and accurate project records.
• Support project closeout activities, including punch lists and turnover documentation.
• Learn VMG's project management processes, safety standards, and quality requirements.
