The Packaging Operations Project Manager is responsible for supporting capital packaging initiatives, maintaining accurate packaging documentation, and leading moderate‑scope projects that impact U.S. and international manufacturing sites. This role combines project management, packaging systems oversight, data accuracy, and cross‑functional collaboration to ensure high‑quality execution of packaging‑related activities across the organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • 3+ yrs experience in project management and or engineering

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and update Packaging Specifications and Packaging Bills of Materials (PBOMs) for U.S. and international manufacturing sites.
  • Allocate approximately 50% of time to PBOM/specification updates and 50% to managing packaging commodity PIERs.
  • Update packaging details for new or revised labels and support label‑only projects in collaboration with Labeling Services.
  • Process PBOM changes in DevEx for all U.S. plants when labels or commodities are modified or added.
  • Serve as an admin approver for new or updated packaging commodities, ensuring specification accuracy, complete documentation, and correct routing.
  • Ensure consistent use, integrity, and performance of the DevEx packaging system.
  • Conduct PBOM and specification audits for compliance and prepare associated metrics.
  • Discontinue PBOMs based on shelf‑life reports and remove outdated packaging specifications no longer in use or not on the Approved Supplier List (ASL).
  • Retrieve archived packaging documents and project records from the Record Information Management System (RIMs).
  • Participate in User Acceptance Testing (UAT) for enhancements to the DevEx PBOM and packaging specification system.
  • Partner with manufacturing sites in Altavista (VA), Casa Grande (AZ), and Columbus (OH) and other Abbott US sites to update PBOMs for New Product Innovation (NPI) initiatives.
  • Manage Packaging Operations Capital Projects under $250M, including preparing and submitting capital request expenditures (RCEs) and securing funding.
  • Manage the Maintenance Budget for supplier molds and tooling.
  • Support display packaging price justifications using Salesforce.
  • Estimate project scope, effort, and resource needs using established project management tools and methodologies.
  • Develop comprehensive project plans, schedules, and budgets using tools such as Microsoft Project.
  • Lead project execution by assigning tasks, monitoring progress, identifying risks, and implementing contingency plans.
  • Ensure project quality through standard development practices and collaboration with SQA on quality plans.
  • Prepare project status reports and participate in internal and customer update meetings.
  • Address and resolve project issues in partnership with team members and key stakeholders.
  • Provide project management guidance and mentorship to junior project leaders and individual contributors.
  • Engage in professional development through participation in industry organizations, conferences, and training.
  • Cultivate strong internal networks and begin developing external connections to support project objectives.
  • Lead moderate‑scope project teams and provide guidance, coaching, and mentoring to less experienced staff.
  • Exercise sound judgment within defined decision‑making parameters and effectively prioritize daily work.
  • Understand the impact of decisions on project timelines and resource allocation.
