About The Position

Austal USA is seeking to hire two Project Coordinator III's to join the team in support of the Submarine Program. This role will provide coordination, guidance, and direction to functional project leads to ensure successful and efficient construction of the vessel, with a focus on milestone achievement and cost and schedule performance. The position involves teaching, mentoring, and advising lower-level Coordinators, as well as coordinating and resolving craft-specific production work sequence conflicts. The Project Coordinator III will maintain a daily presence to monitor safety, housekeeping, work progress, and staff performance, and will conduct and attend meetings as required. They will ensure work in progress aligns with the published schedule sequence and that production schedules are reasonable and achievable. A key responsibility is performing random validation of status reporting against actual work performed to ensure accuracy for Earned Value Management (EVM) processes. The role also requires ensuring compliance with Quality procedures, contract requirements, and regulatory body and classification society guides, rules, and regulations. Daily communication with the Project Manager is essential for reporting status, issues, and initiating variance analysis and corrective action plans. The Project Coordinator III will monitor and validate resource requirements and the use of rework and lessons learned processes for continuous improvement. Support for executive briefings, meetings, tours, and reporting as requested by the Project Manager is also part of the role. This position will involve considerable time (as much as 100%) onboard the vessel at various degrees of construction, requiring movement up and down staircases and vertical ladders at heights exceeding 75 feet in potentially extreme temperatures. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential.

Requirements

  • Fully competent in industry related crafts or disciplines
  • Ability to read and interpret shipbuilding contracts and specifications
  • Ability to read and interpret regulatory body and classification society guides, rules and regulations
  • Ability to read and comprehend engineering drawings and data and navigate with applicable software
  • Minimum 5 years experience in a ship building, ship repair or similar construction and manufacturing industrial type environment with a minimum 3 years’ experience at a Foreman level (or equivalent) OR minimum 2 years as a Level II Project Coordinator
  • Ability to use and interpret relevant cost and schedule (EVMS) data and use applicable software associated with these reporting functions
  • Have a working knowledge and past experience with EVMS principles and processes
  • Ability to understand schedule reporting tools and be competent in maintaining and validating schedule related data
  • Competent in use of Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook and Excel) and PowerPoint software
  • Ability to work independently and be self-motivated
  • Willingness to work irregular and sometimes lengthy work schedule
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • Must be able to tour all vessels and work sites
  • Must have the ability to bend, squat, stoop, crawl, and kneel
  • Perform prolonged standing
  • Ability to turn head from side to side and about the vertical axis
  • Ability to turn body at the waist from side to side and about the vertical axis
  • Lift/push/pull 50lbs to 75lbs on an occasional basis
  • Lift/push/pull up to 20lbs on a frequent basis
  • Must have the ability to climb in a safe manner (climbing as a minimum includes stairs, scaffolding, ladders, and ramps)
  • Ability to work at heights above 12’ while working from ladders, scaffolding and/or man lifts
  • Able to work at a variety of levels (ex. waist, eye, overhead)
  • Demonstrate the ability to safely and appropriately use required tools and equipment
  • Demonstrate good balance while working on uneven surfaces and maneuvering obstacles
  • Possess sufficient handgrip and coordination to carry and operate tools and equipment
  • Ability to utilize personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toes shoes, goggles, respirator, safety harness, safety line, flotation gear, etc.) safely per OSHA standards
  • Ability to withstand cold and hot temperatures
  • Ability to enter 18” x 36” openings and work in confined spaces for prolonged periods of time
  • Able to respond to verbal and audible sounds/commands
  • Able to utilize adequate visual skills
  • Ability to fully extend the arm while reaching overhead, reaching out, reaching to the side and reaching down
  • Ability to perceive attributes of an object/material such as size, shape, temperature and texture by means of receptors in the hands and fingers
  • Must comply with company, federal, state, and local safety and environmental rules and regulations while performing daily job tasks
  • Candidate must meet Austal USA’s basic employment eligibility guidelines
  • 18 years of age or older at time of application
  • Able to provide proof of US Person Status
  • No felony convictions of Theft/Deception or Violent crimes within seven years from disposition date
  • No felony convictions of Drug crimes within three years from disposition date
  • Willing to submit to a drug screen
  • Willing to submit to a background check

  • The ability to obtain and maintain a DoD clearance may be required if deemed necessary in the scope of your position responsibilities

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the work in progress is in accordance with the published schedule sequence and that the production schedules are reasonable and achievable

  • Monitor and ensure compliance with the contract requirements

  • Maintain daily communication and interaction with the Project Manager to report status and issues and have the ability to initiate and follow through with required variance analysis and associated corrective action plans
  • Monitor and validate resource requirements for actuals against planned work in progress
  • Monitor and validate use of rework and lessons learned processes and initiatives to maintain and promote continuous improvement
