About The Position

The Indianapolis Zoo is seeking part-time Programs Educators (approximately 15-20 hours per week, year-round) to facilitate various pre-registered programs and support the Education Department's mission to protect nature and inspire people to care for our world. This role involves teaching Zoo Overnights, School Workshops, Video Chats, Family and Youth Programs, Dolphin In-water, Camps, and Animal Arts. The position also assists with other conservation education initiatives and projects, conducts research for programs, updates databases, provides clerical assistance, and supports customer service functions. The Programs Educator will collaborate with other Zoo departments to ensure seamless program delivery. While the role is predominantly indoors, there is some exposure to outdoor environmental conditions. Availability on at least three weekdays and evenings is required, with potential for weekend hours and increased hours during peak programming seasons.

Requirements

  • A minimum of two (2) years related work experience.
  • A professional, positive, respectful, and enthusiastic attitude while interacting with guests, volunteers, and co-workers.
  • Previous formal or informal educational institution experience required.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to work under pressure in a public setting.
  • Excellent public speaking, communication, and writing skills.
  • Working knowledge of teaching pedagogies and inquiry-based learning.
  • Experience in designing and conducting educational programs.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours including weekdays, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Proficiency with computer software programs including, but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint software, and web-based meeting platforms.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Education, Environmental Science, Biology, or a related field is required.
  • Availability of at least three weekdays and evenings is required.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment testing including a background check, motor vehicle check (if applicable) and a drug test.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate various pre-registered programs for the Education Department, including Zoo Overnights, School Workshops, Video Chats, Family and Youth Programs, Dolphin In-water, Camps, and Animal Arts.
  • Assist with other conservation education initiatives and projects as assigned.
  • Work closely with the Education Programs Manager and other Education team members.
  • Conduct research for existing and new programs.
  • Update various databases.
  • Provide clerical assistance as needed.
  • Assist with customer service functions.
  • Partner with other Zoo departments (Animal Care, Guest Experience, Security, Marketing, etc.) to maintain seamless delivery of all programs.
