Guest Engagement Educator (Part Time)
About The Position
The Guest Engagement Educator delivers educational content to guests during animal encounter opportunities throughout the Zoo. The role fosters an inclusive and welcoming educational environment through positive, unique, and memorable onsite encounters, including at aquarium touch pools, the goat habitat, and giraffe feedings. This part-time position is limited to a maximum of 29 hours per week and requires a flexible schedule that includes weekends, evenings, and holidays. The position is in the Conservation/Education department, is classified as non-exempt, and reports to the Animal Engagement Supervisor. Starting pay is $16.50 per hour. Employees may also be assigned other duties or special projects in the best interest of the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium. The position consistently involves exposure to nuts and shellfish.
Requirements
- High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and audio-visual equipment.
- Strong presentation, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without assistance depending on the task.
- Willingness to become CPR/First-Aid certified.
- Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, and overnight/evening hours, in all weather extremes.
- Must pass a background and drug screening.

- Previous interpretation or other informal education experience.
- Previous zoo, aquarium, or museum-related experience.
Responsibilities
- Enhance the guest experience by initiating conversations, answering questions, and educating guests about animals.
- Use inclusive teaching strategies, adapt interpretation styles, and incorporate learning models to support successful learning for all audiences.
- Work autonomously during animal and guest encounters, adapting as needed and using sound judgment in safety-related decisions.
- Maintain a general understanding of the animal collection, conservation projects, and sustainability initiatives to communicate appropriate conservation messaging.
- Adapt teaching and learning styles to each engagement.
- Maintain a positive disposition and practice active listening during visitor interactions.
- Assist education leadership with program development and enhancement, including gathering and maintaining resources and providing administrative support.
- Continue improving knowledge of animal welfare, interpretation techniques, and science education techniques.
- Assist in facilitating and implementing the Zoo and Aquarium’s mission, strategic plan, and core values.
- Perform other duties or special projects as assigned.
