About The Position

Red Barrels is the Montreal-based independent studio behind the immersive horror franchise Outlast, a series that has terrified more than 40 million players worldwide. Red Barrels is dedicated to creating unforgettable experiences that send chills down players’ spines. To join our large team of horror fans, you must be comfortable working with and around horror elements and everything the genre entails (nudity, blood, “mature” visual reference material, etc.), have a results-oriented mindset, and enjoy making quick and efficient iterations. Our studio is looking for a versatile Gameplay Programmer who brings a high level of creativity and innovation to their work. We’re looking for someone who wants to do things differently and who thrives in a collaborative studio environment. In this role, you’ll work closely with designers, artists, and the programming team to deliver a high-quality experience for players.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional experience in C++, as well as experience in game development programming.
  • Good knowledge of animation systems.
  • You are familiar with current trends in gameplay and game systems.
  • Knowledge of Unreal.
  • Familiarity with bug-tracking software such as Jira and version control systems such as Perforce.
  • Passionate, solution-oriented, proactive, and self-motivated.
  • You enjoy analyzing competitors’ games and providing references for the 3Cs, gameplay elements, and core mechanics of different game types.

Nice To Haves

  • A passion for horror games, movies, and books.
  • Experience with NPC AI is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • You work closely with artists, designers, and other programmers to help develop immersive features that enhance the player experience.
  • Assess the complexity of tasks and break them down to meet project milestones.
  • Write clear, maintainable, portable, and highly functional code.
  • Identify problems and opportunities, and brainstorm creative solutions.
  • Perform other related tasks within the programming team and contribute to all aspects of our game development.
  • Be results-oriented and enjoy working with rapid, efficient iterations.
