About The Position

NBCUniversal is looking for a highly skilled Senior Gameplay Systems Programmer to help build the core gameplay experience of an ambitious new AAA platform developed in Unreal Engine 5. This role focuses on the implementation and evolution of scalable gameplay systems supporting systemic gameplay, multiplayer experiences, and user-generated content (UGC). As part of the Gameplay Systems team, you will work closely with Lead Programmers, Gameplay Architect, Designers, AI and Gameplay Engineers, technical teams, and Technical Directors to develop robust gameplay frameworks and features that support both internally-developed and player-authored experiences. This is an opportunity to contribute to a highly collaborative, technically ambitious project focused on emergent gameplay, player creativity, and long-term platform evolution.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional gameplay programming experience in game development
  • Strong proficiency in C++ and gameplay systems development
  • Solid hands-on experience with Unreal Engine gameplay frameworks and systems
  • Experience contributing to at least one shipped game title, preferably AAA
  • Strong understanding of gameplay architecture, modular systems design, and software engineering best practices
  • Experience developing gameplay systems in collaborative, multidisciplinary environments
  • Strong debugging, profiling, and optimization skills
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working on open-world, sandbox, multiplayer, or systemic gameplay experiences
  • Familiarity with user-generated content (UGC), modding support, creator tools, or extensible gameplay systems
  • Experience with multiplayer gameplay architecture and replication systems
  • Familiarity with AI gameplay systems, vehicles, traversal systems, or simulation-driven gameplay
  • Experience rapidly prototyping gameplay features while maintaining production-quality standards
  • Passion for building gameplay systems that support creativity, experimentation, and emergent player experiences
  • Experience working on live-service or continuously evolving game platforms

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain scalable gameplay systems and frameworks in Unreal Engine 5
  • Develop gameplay features supporting systemic player interaction, emergent gameplay, and dynamic world responsiveness
  • Build gameplay systems related to traversal, combat, vehicles, AI interactions, environmental systems, and player-driven mechanics
  • Contribute to frameworks and workflows supporting user-generated content (UGC), creator-facing systems, and extensible gameplay logic
  • Collaborate closely with designers and cross-disciplinary teams to prototype, iterate, and productionize gameplay features
  • Write clean, modular, maintainable, and performant gameplay code following established engineering standards and best practices
  • Support multiplayer gameplay implementation, including networking, replication, and gameplay state synchronization
  • Debug, optimize, and profile gameplay systems across multiple target platforms
  • Participate in code reviews and contribute to continuous improvement of gameplay engineering practices and workflows
  • Help identify technical risks and implementation challenges while contributing practical solutions
  • Collaborate with Tools and Technical teams to improve workflows supporting large-scale gameplay and content development
