Engineer Production 3

Daikin•Waller, TX

About The Position

The Production Engineer 3 is responsible for continuously improving manufacturing processes, fabrication and assembly, reducing costs, processing engineering changes, and introducing new products. The role provides guidance and mentoring to junior engineers, technicians, and operations support staff, and independently plans and executes capital projects and significant cross-functional activities. The engineer is expected to be results-oriented, collaborative, dedicated to excellence, and guided by strong work ethics. The position applies advanced manufacturing engineering knowledge to manage projects and processes with limited supervision, coach lower-level professionals, and address difficult or complex problems. It supports HVAC product and manufacturing design, product launches and modifications, equipment and supplier development, and ongoing improvements in quality, efficiency, cost, and equipment performance. The role reports to the Manager, Production Engineering. Work takes place in a high-volume manufacturing environment that includes forklift traffic and potentially noisy areas. Personal protective equipment is required, including hearing protection where needed. Travel of up to 20% may be required for equipment run-off.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of manufacturing engineering theory, processes, and practice.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing concepts, including Kaizen, value-stream mapping, Kanban, demand-flow technology, line balancing, and time studies.
  • Skill in two or more of the following areas: aluminum or steel fabrication/stamping, tooling, molding, finishing, tubing fabrication, paint, assembly/manufacturing processes, or controls.
  • Knowledge of specifications and standards used in the HVAC industry.
  • Proficiency in core manufacturing documentation, manufacturing in a high-volume environment, and engineering change processes.
  • Capability with PFMEAs, Process Control Plans, Process Flow Diagrams, DFA/DFM, and operator instructions.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and coach technicians and others in manufacturing core skills.
  • Software skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, and PowerPoint; AutoCAD; Mapics; and 3D modeling software.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills, compliance orientation, and attention to detail.
  • Organizational, time-management, and project-management skills.
  • Interpersonal and collaboration skills and ability to work with teams.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in technical disciplines within manufacturing processes and ability to design complete processes for multiple product families.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to speak technically on behalf of the team.
  • Good judgment, strong work ethics, and integrity.
  • Ability to perform essential responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Ability to travel up to 20% for equipment run-off.
  • Ability to sit and work at a computer for prolonged periods; stand, walk, bend, and stoop to move, view, and transfer product; and, as required, lift, carry, or move up to 40 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Manufacturing engineering experience in an assembly HVAC environment, or in the automotive or appliance industry, is preferred.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Six Sigma certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Establish continuous-improvement goals and execute action plans.
  • Use lean manufacturing methods to identify opportunities for cost reduction, improved quality and workflow, estimating, project analysis, technology development, and manufacturing capability.
  • Participate in and lead design of experiments (DOE), 8D problem solving, FMEA, Six Sigma, design-for-manufacturing (DFM) analysis, and Kaizen activities.
  • Work with Design Engineers to revise and sustain HVAC products, tooling, and machine designs, and provide manufacturing technical support to design project teams.
  • Support and mentor junior engineers, technicians, and support staff.
  • Develop and manage project schedules for product launches and design modifications.
  • Document product designs by preparing cost analyses, reviewing drawings, and preparing engineering change requests.
  • Work with team members to redesign internal components to improve long-term system quality and efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Develop engineering solutions to product issues using problem-solving and root-cause-analysis techniques.
  • Participate in cross-functional teams to launch product modifications, resolve issues, and support product improvements.
  • Plan small- to medium-sized projects and new-process releases, including obtaining quotes, preparing Capital Approval Requests (CARs), and issuing requisitions and purchase orders.
  • Oversee capital expenditure (CAPEX) development through full project implementation.
  • Coordinate and communicate project work across the department and with other departments to complete projects on time and within budget.
  • Develop suppliers for manufacturing equipment and key suppliers, and foster continuous improvement in equipment uptime, efficiency, and quality.
