About The Position

The Product Manager for Emission Abatement & Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) Systems serves as the primary technical authority on emissions-control technologies for large-bore reciprocating internal combustion engines (RICE). The role leads engineering specification, design, integration, optimization, troubleshooting, lifecycle support, and regulatory compliance strategies for emissions-control systems across Enerflex’s power generation team. It requires practical knowledge of SCR, oxidation and three-way catalysts, ammonia slip catalysts, urea/DEF and ammonia dosing systems, emissions instrumentation and controls, and exhaust-system integration. Reporting to the Director of Power Generation, the role works with Product Development, Applications Engineering, Manufacturing, Commissioning, Service, suppliers, and customers. It ensures emissions-abatement systems are technically sound, safe, reliable, manufacturable, serviceable, and capable of meeting project emissions requirements. The position also provides technical guidance for testing, commissioning, field support, compliance, and the development of future emissions-abatement products and application capabilities. The work takes place in a fast-paced general office environment, and many tasks are time-sensitive. Domestic and international travel may be required on occasion.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or Environmental Engineering.
  • At least 5 years of direct experience in the design, testing, and operation of SCR systems.
  • Proven expertise with reciprocating engines, including their exhaust-flow pulsations, temperature profiles, and transient behaviors.
  • Understanding of catalyst chemistry, including Vanadium-Tungsten and Zeolite, and the chemical reactions involved in NOx reduction.
  • Understanding of reductant fluid dynamics, including urea decomposition, pyrolysis risk management, and spray crystallization prevention.
  • Familiarity with engine control units (ECUs), closed-loop emissions-control logic, and NOx/NH3 sensor integration.
  • Experience with related emissions components such as Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) and oxidation catalysts.
  • Strong communication skills to explain complex chemical and mechanical concepts to clients, sales teams, and field technicians.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the scoping and integration of emissions-abatement equipment, primarily SCR systems, including catalyst modules, urea/ammonia dosing systems, and mixing ducts with natural-gas reciprocating engines.
  • Collaborate with Applications and Product Development to ensure products meet project requirements and quantify technical risks for management teams.
  • Review technology efficiencies, ammonia slip, and backpressure constraints to balance emissions performance with engine fuel efficiency.
  • Review vendor proposals, calculations, P&IDs, general arrangements, equipment specifications, control narratives, and instrumentation requirements; use engine OEM data and project operating profiles to identify risks before equipment release.
  • Establish design criteria for pressure drop, catalyst face velocity, mixing, exhaust temperature, instrumentation locations, service access, and catalyst replacement.
  • Evaluate emissions-system operation throughout the engine operating envelope, including startup, shutdown, load changes, and turndown.
  • Review subcontractor CFD and thermal modeling to assess reductant mixing and temperature distribution.
  • Advise on and review subcontractor designs for three-way catalysts, oxidation catalysts, and stack or ducting pressure drop.
  • Develop best practices and testing procedures for technicians, assist with procurement of testing instruments, and coordinate with third-party testing companies as needed.
  • Develop requirements for instrument calibration, sampling locations, sample conditioning, test stabilization, data recording, and test reporting.
  • Work with subcontractors to diagnose field failures, including catalyst poisoning, masking, thermal degradation, and dosing-system malfunctions; interpret data to distinguish among engine, dosing, catalyst, controls, instrumentation, and exhaust-distribution issues.
  • Provide technical guidance during commissioning and testing, generally in the Company’s shop, and remote field support for Enerflex service technicians.
  • Develop company best practices and procedures for startup and commissioning, including checklists, acceptance criteria, troubleshooting guides, and technician procedures.
  • Assist with troubleshooting when installed systems do not meet design or permit requirements; capture field lessons and use them to improve designs, specifications, and commissioning practices.
  • Maintain knowledge of global emissions standards, including EPA Tier 4, IMO Tier III, and Stage V, to guide product development and client compliance.
  • Support Product Development by evaluating emerging catalyst materials, control algorithms, and alternative reductants.
  • Enhance the Applications Department’s capability to produce quality initial designs and select suitable emissions-abatement solutions.
