About The Position

Via is hiring multiple product designers at varying experience levels to redesign its Transit Operations platform, which supports on-demand, paratransit, school bus, and fixed-line services for public agencies. The platform serves transit agency staff and leaders as well as riders, caregivers, and students. The role focuses on making complex, mission-critical transit workflows insights-first, intuitive, efficient, and accessible, particularly for people with disabilities and riders with limited alternatives. The designer will lead the redesign of dispatch and booking experiences and help shape an AI-led design process, moving from research synthesis and concept exploration through rapid prototyping and production-ready code in close partnership with engineers. The work is forward-deployed: the designer will spend time with agencies and engineering teams, validate ideas against real operations, and ship solutions alongside the team. The role also includes research and usability testing, collaboration with analysts, detailed execution from concept to pixel-perfect design, and deliberate evolution of the design system.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of experience in digital product design.
  • A portfolio demonstrating leadership from concept through launch on complex products.
  • Systems-thinking mindset and experience designing dense, data-rich, high-stakes workflows.
  • A point of view on how AI changes the design process and curiosity to keep exploring it.
  • Comfort prototyping beyond Figma and moving work toward production code, or a strong drive to learn.
  • Strong Figma and prototyping skills and a high bar for craft.
  • Clear communication and ability to explain the reasoning behind design decisions.
  • Ownership, independence, and pragmatism about timelines, scope, and technical constraints.
  • Empathy for people who depend on public transit and genuine interest in equitable mobility.
  • A degree in Design, HCI, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • Design rider eligibility, special conditions, and disability-aid workflows to support dignified and accessible trips.
  • Shape the design team's use of AI, including research synthesis, concept exploration, rapid prototyping, and production-ready code.
  • Work directly with agencies and engineers, test ideas against real operations, and ship alongside the team.
  • Conduct research and usability testing, and partner with analysts to translate data into design decisions.
  • Own design details from concept through pixel-perfect execution and make tradeoffs explicit.
  • Evolve the design system as the product scales.
