About The Position

The Product Compliance and Test Engineer reviews new product designs, supports engineering changes to existing designs, and evaluates legacy equipment against evolving standards. The role determines functional, environmental, and compliance test requirements and their applicability, develops and completes test plans, and documents results in accordance with ISO 17025. It evaluates test progress, conditions, measurement methods, and component or equipment performance against specifications and harmonized standards, with familiarity with IEC 61010 (safety) and IEC 61326 (EMC). The engineer reviews and documents test results, takes corrective action as needed, analyzes component failures, and recommends alternate components or design changes. The role authors and defends test reports submitted to international certification bodies such as CSA and ETL. It also specifies, selects, or designs laboratory test equipment; assists with documents for fabricating new test equipment; writes operating and verification procedures; creates preventative maintenance procedures and schedules; and prepares laboratory work instructions for others. Optional responsibilities include supporting Ex Quality Management System requirements for equipment intended for explosive atmospheres, including work instruction review, production audits, ECO review against certification documents, and component incoming inspection guides. There may also be an opportunity to develop software for hardware interfaces, control, data collection, and reporting to support laboratory testing. Work takes place in normal office and laboratory environments. Extra hours may occasionally be required to meet commitments, but are atypical. The role may be performed from home two days per week depending on laboratory workload. Travel is less than 5%, with potential international travel to standards meetings.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of experience in product safety or EMC evaluation, electronics design, or relevant laboratory work toward product compliance safety evaluation.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or higher is recommended; other engineering or physical science degrees may be acceptable with suitable laboratory or relevant electrical/electronics experience.
  • Solid understanding of basic physics and physical concepts, including AC/DC voltage, electrical current, resistance, inductance, capacitance, power, energy, force, acceleration, temperature, pressure, and heat transfer.
  • Strong background using varied test equipment, including multimeters, calibrators, oscilloscopes, signal generators, power supplies, spectrum analyzers, current clamps, and thermometers; able to select suitable equipment for tasks with limited assistance.
  • Comfort working around high voltage, high temperature, high pressure, flammable materials, and other potentially hazardous test environments while rigorously following safety precautions.
  • Ability to analyze schematics and wiring diagrams to understand circuit function, potential failure sources, and components and subsystems used for hazard protection.
  • Basic understanding of metrology and interpreting laboratory equipment specifications and suitability for measurement needs.
  • Basic electronics skills, including op-amp, diode, and transistor circuit analysis, power transformers, and switching power supplies.
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and apply generalized test procedures and standards to varied product applications.
  • Strong background in MS Office and other software tools, including Teams, Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access, SharePoint, and Miro; experience with formatting and document manipulation is required.
  • Strong language and communication skills, including technical writing, user documentation review and editing, and clear communication through email, Teams, phone, and instant messaging.
  • Ability to disassemble and reassemble sophisticated test, measurement, and laboratory equipment without instructions or causing damage, to facilitate design review, testing preparation, and failure analysis.
  • Comfort training other associates in the use of laboratory equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with third-party certification organizations such as UL, CSA, TUV, or Intertek.
  • Working knowledge of high-frequency RF.
  • Experience with IEC 80079-34 and IEC 60079-0 and -11 for intrinsically safe designs.
  • Experience with LabVIEW.
  • Experience in document automation, template creation, VBA, and macro writing.
