About The Position

The Product Compliance and Test Engineer reviews new product designs, supports engineering changes to existing designs, and evaluates legacy equipment against evolving standards. The role determines functional, environmental, and compliance test requirements and the applicability of tests, equipment, and facilities. It develops test plans, performs and evaluates tests, documents results in compliance with ISO 17025, and assesses whether test conditions, measurement methods, and component or equipment performance meet specifications and harmonized standards. Familiarity with IEC 61010 safety and IEC 61326 EMC standards is relevant to the work. The engineer reviews test results, takes corrective action as needed, analyzes component failures, and recommends alternate components or design changes. The role authors and defends test reports submitted to international certification bodies such as CSA and ETL. It also specifies, selects, or designs laboratory test equipment; helps prepare fabrication documents; writes operating and verification procedures; develops preventative maintenance procedures and schedules; and creates laboratory work instructions for others. Optional work includes supporting Ex Quality Management System requirements for equipment used in explosive atmospheres, including factory work instruction review, production audits, ECO review against certification documents, and incoming component inspection guides. There may also be an opportunity to develop software for hardware interfaces, control, data collection, and reporting for laboratory testing. The work takes place in normal office and laboratory environments. The position offers the opportunity to work from home two days per week, depending on laboratory workload. Travel is less than 5%, with potential international travel to standards meetings. Extra hours may be required to meet commitments but are described as atypical.

Requirements

  • Minimum 7 years of experience in product safety or EMC evaluation, electronics design, or relevant laboratory work toward product compliance safety evaluation.
  • A bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or higher is recommended; other engineering or physical science degrees may be acceptable with suitable laboratory or relevant electrical/electronics experience.
  • Solid understanding of basic physics and physical concepts, including voltage, current, resistance, inductance, capacitance, power, energy, force, acceleration, temperature, pressure, and heat transfer.
  • Strong background using a wide variety of test equipment, including multimeters, calibrators, oscilloscopes, signal generators, power supplies, spectrum analyzers, current clamps, and thermometers; understanding of equipment capabilities and limitations is required.
  • Ability to select appropriate equipment for each task or measurement with limited assistance.
  • Comfort working around high voltage, high temperature, high pressure, flammable materials, and other potentially hazardous test environments while rigorously following safety precautions.

  • Basic understanding of metrology and ability to interpret laboratory equipment specifications and suitability for measurement needs.
  • Basic electronics skills, including op-amp, diode, and transistor circuit analysis, power transformers, and switching power supplies.
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and apply generalized test procedures and standards to varied product applications.
  • Strong background with MS Office and other software tools, including Teams, Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access, SharePoint, and Miro; formatting and document manipulation experience is required.
  • Strong language and communication skills, including technical writing, user documentation review and editing, and clear communication through email, Teams, phone, and instant messaging.
  • Ability to disassemble and reassemble sophisticated test, measurement, and laboratory equipment without instructions or damage to facilitate design review, test preparation, and failure analysis.
  • Comfort training other associates on laboratory equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with a third-party certification house such as UL, CSA, TUV, or Intertek.
  • Working knowledge of high-frequency RF.
  • Experience with IEC 80079-34 and IEC 60079-0 and -11 for intrinsically safe designs.
  • Experience with LabView.
  • Experience with document automation, template creation, VBA, and macro writing.
