About The Position

The Produce Lead oversees produce operations to ensure compliance with company policies, product quality and freshness, and effective inventory management. The role supports operational excellence by following food safety, merchandising, and replenishment standards and contributing to department performance. This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities. Full open availability is required, and a valid ServSafe Food Safety Certification must be maintained in good standing; BJ’s covers applicable certification costs and training.

Requirements

• At least 2 years of experience in produce operations, grocery retail, or food handling.
• Strong knowledge of produce handling, quality standards, and food safety guidelines.
• Ability to analyze data and identify process improvements to optimize efficiency.
• Detail-oriented, with strong organizational and multitasking skills.
• Proficiency in basic computer applications, including MS Word, Excel, and email.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Must maintain all required training and certifications, including a valid ServSafe Food Safety Certification.
• Full open availability is required.

Responsibilities

• Maintain produce freshness through regular culling and rotation, ensuring products meet company quality standards.
• Monitor inventory and replenish products in a timely manner to maintain availability.
• Inspect, rotate, cull, and merchandise produce according to company standards.
• Ensure items are accurately priced and labeled and comply with company policies.
• Track and analyze sales, waste, and shrink data to identify process improvements and cost-reduction opportunities.
• Maintain sanitation, safety, and food-handling compliance, including ServSafe guidelines.
• Keep produce equipment clean and properly maintained, and report equipment maintenance needs to management.
• Assist with promotional plans and merchandising directives.
• Escalate operational concerns to management as needed.
• Apply FIFO rotation procedures to reduce waste and maintain product quality.
• Inspect produce cases, coolers, and freezers daily for appropriate conditions and food-safety compliance.
• Assist with receiving and inspecting shipments to verify accuracy.
• Support inventory audits and reconciliation to minimize shrink and maintain accurate records.
• Use knowledge of product movement, seasonal trends, and Member purchasing habits to optimize stocking strategies.
• Conduct product freshness and quality checks.
• Provide additional support across departments as needed.
• Maintain regular, predictable, full attendance to support operations and leadership coverage.
