Principal Verification and Validation Engineer

East Penn Manufacturing Company•Ann Arbor, MI

About The Position

Navitas Systems is seeking a self-motivated verification and validation engineer to support and improve its existing Battery Management Systems product line and help establish verification strategy, test infrastructure, and engineering practices for its next-generation platform. The role joins development at a foundational stage and contributes across the product development V-model, with ownership of verification activities from requirements and test planning through system integration and production release. The engineer develops repeatable verification methods spanning software, electronics, communications, and complete battery systems, and works with cross-functional engineering and product teams to verify product behavior, resolve issues, and support release readiness.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • At least 7 years of verification, validation, embedded systems testing, or related product development experience.
  • Experience owning verification activities through multiple stages of the V-model, including requirements analysis, test planning, test case development, execution, defect resolution, and release support.
  • Experience testing embedded products that interface with electronics, sensors, communications, and control hardware.
  • Experience developing automated test environments and regression testing for embedded systems.
  • Experience in battery, automotive, aerospace, medical device, power electronics, industrial controls, or similar safety-critical product development.
  • Strong understanding of requirements-based verification and traceability.
  • Experience developing test plans, test procedures, test cases, and objective pass/fail criteria.
  • Experience with SIL, HIL, automated bench testing, or comparable embedded-system verification methods.
  • Experience with CAN communications protocols and UDS using tools such as CANalyzer, CANoe, or similar.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and troubleshoot interactions among software, hardware, communications, and test equipment.
  • Experience with automated test tools and scripting using Python, C, C++, MATLAB, CAPL, or similar environments.
  • Experience with test equipment such as programmable power supplies, electronic loads, oscilloscopes, data acquisition systems, CAN interfaces, and digital multimeters.
  • Experience with requirements management and traceability tools such as Polarion, Visure, Jama, DOORS, or similar.
  • Ability to independently define a test strategy from an ambiguous verification objective and drive it to completion.
  • Ability to investigate failures across software, hardware, systems, and test boundaries, not only work from predefined procedures.
  • Comfort working hands-on and being accountable for product results in a small engineering team.
  • Ability to clearly communicate test results, risks, failures, and recommendations across engineering disciplines.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct lithium-ion battery or BMS verification and validation experience.
  • Experience developing or maintaining HIL environments using dSPACE, Vector, NI, MxV, or similar platforms.
  • MATLAB, Simulink, Stateflow, model-based development, or generated-code verification experience.
  • Functional safety experience with ISO 26262, IEC 61508, or comparable safety-critical development standards.
  • ASPICE or comparable structured product development experience based on the V-model.
  • Experience with automated regression testing integrated into CI/CD environments such as GitLab, GitHub, or Jenkins.
  • Experience with verification coverage analysis, defect tracking, release readiness, and test reporting.
  • Experience supporting certification, compliance testing, customer audits, or external test laboratories.

Responsibilities

  • Develop verification plans and test cases from system, software, hardware, and product requirements.
  • Establish and maintain requirements-based traceability among requirements, test cases, test results, defects, and product releases.
  • Develop and execute verification at software integration, SIL, HIL, bench, system, and battery pack levels.
  • Design and implement automated regression testing for BMS software and system functionality.
  • Develop and maintain test environments, fixtures, harnesses, simulation interfaces, and supporting test equipment.
  • Verify BMS functions including protection, diagnostics, communications, cell monitoring, balancing, contactor control, battery state estimation, and system-level behavior.
  • Own complex verification issues spanning software, hardware, communications, and battery systems, driving them through root cause and resolution.
  • Work with Systems, Software, Hardware, Mechanical, Manufacturing, Quality, and Field Application teams to define verification methods and support product development.
  • Evaluate verification coverage, identify gaps, and improve test effectiveness, repeatability, and automation.
  • Support structured engineering processes for verification planning, test execution, regression testing, defect management, and release readiness.
  • Provide technical direction and oversight for verification activities conducted by external engineering partners and test laboratories.
