Principal Software Engineer (Integrations)

Nerdery•Minneapolis, MN
•$164,500 - $200,000

About The Position

Nerdery is a digital product consultancy that partners with clients to create digital products and solve problems across strategy, design, and technology. The Principal Software Engineer (Integrations) will serve as the technical lead and a full-time hands-on builder for a multi-tenant ERP connector framework for Fleetio, a fleet maintenance SaaS platform. The initial adapters will support SAP S/4HANA Cloud and Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. The role owns the framework architecture and early technical decisions, leads three senior engineers and a QA engineer, and is accountable for ensuring financial data moves between Fleetio and customer ERPs without duplicate postings and with a complete audit trail. The Principal Engineer is the primary technical voice to Fleetio’s product, integrations, and infrastructure teams, and will transfer the framework to Fleetio’s integrations team at the end of the engagement. The position includes hands-on framework development, technical leadership, coordination across implementation lanes, client-facing communication, quality and testing standards, AI-assisted engineering practices, sales support, and knowledge transfer. Nerdery is remote-friendly, with Minnesota office space available for employees who prefer an in-office or collaborative setting.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in a computer-related field, coding bootcamp certificate, or thorough demonstration of self-taught software development skills.
  • At least 8 years of software development experience.
  • At least 2–3 years of application software architecture experience, including familiarity with common design patterns and approaches to typical application problems in the discipline.
  • Ability to write complex software and explain the rationale behind code.
  • Strong technical communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical problems to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong understanding of the development process and ability to maintain an iterative approach throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Experience architecting and shipping production system-to-system integrations or an integration platform; web-application architecture alone is insufficient.
  • Deep data-integrity design experience, including idempotency, outbox or ledger patterns, at-least-once delivery, and reconciliation.
  • Multi-tenant SaaS design experience, including tenant isolation such as row-level security, per-tenant secrets, and kill switches.
  • AWS and infrastructure-as-code design responsibility, not merely usage.
  • Fluency in Python and/or TypeScript/Node, and comfort reading Ruby/Rails.
  • Experience leading a client-facing technical engagement under a hard deadline.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and architecting scalable, reliable, and maintainable backend systems and system-to-system integrations, with a strong understanding of distributed systems, architectural trade-offs, and production-level design decisions.
  • Hands-on experience integrating AI-assisted development tools into daily software engineering workflows, including code generation, debugging, testing, refactoring, and technical problem-solving.
  • Ability to leverage AI development tools using structured context management, clear technical specifications, prompt engineering, and iterative validation of AI-generated solutions.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience or demonstrated ability to participate in client pitches.
  • Exposure to full-stack applications and coding skills outside the candidate’s specialization.
  • Experience with SAP S/4HANA APIs, including OData/SOAP, communication arrangements, or SAP Cloud SDK, and/or Dynamics 365 Business Central.
  • Experience with ERP accounting flows, including journal entries, purchase order to goods receipt to supplier invoice, and three-way match.
  • Experience with iPaaS platforms such as Paragon or Workato.
  • Experience designing a framework or SDK intended for reuse by another team.
  • Experience designing, building, or integrating AI-powered applications, autonomous agents, or agentic workflows using LLM APIs, AI orchestration frameworks, or related technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Own and evolve the framework design, including module boundaries, adapter interface, idempotency ledger, posting matrix, Postgres-as-queue and managed-queue upgrade path, and tenant configuration.
  • Run early technical decision spikes and write decision records covering platform options, language and SDK choices, AWS environment layout, Fleetio API gaps, and SAP journal-entry timeout recovery.
  • Gate canonical data models with Fleetio; define interim models and obtain sign-off if Fleetio’s models arrive late.
  • Translate accounting requirements into design and lead review of posting defaults, including journal-entry mode, company code, tax, currency, and posting dates.
  • Build core framework code alongside the team, especially ledger and posting-integrity paths.
  • Sequence work across the SAP and Dynamics lanes, maintain an honest SAP-ready-by-end-of-January scope using the agreed cut order, and raise scope-capacity conflicts early.
  • Set engineering standards aligned with Fleetio quality guidelines and IaC standards such as Terraform or Pulumi.
  • Review code and establish the test strategy with QA, including duplicate-posting and fault-injection tests.
  • Lead the technical side of the Fleetio kickoff demo scheduled for February 1–4.
  • Prepare knowledge transfer and runbooks for Fleetio’s integrations team.
  • Set the team’s approach to AI-assisted development within the SOW’s AI clause.
  • Provide ad hoc technical support to other practitioners in the domain as needed.
  • Assist with sales requests by providing technical recommendations and estimates to prospective clients.
  • Participate in other duties as assigned.

Benefits

  • Two medical plan options, including an HSA-eligible plan.
  • Dental and vision insurance.
  • Company-paid Basic Life and AD&D Insurance.
  • Company-paid Short-Term Disability and Long-Term Disability coverage.
  • Discounted employee-paid options including Voluntary Life and AD&D, Accident, Critical Illness, Hospital Indemnity, Pet Insurance, Legal Support, and Identity Theft Protection.
  • 401(k) plan with company match of up to 3.5% and immediate vesting.
  • Flexible time off (Flex PTO) for vacation, personal time, personal illness, or caring for dependents.
  • Remote-friendly workplace, with Minnesota office space available for in-office or collaborative work.
  • Dedicated resources and access to funds for professional development, industry conferences, and certifications.
