About The Position

Nerdery is a digital product consultancy that partners with clients to help them grow their businesses and create thoughtfully designed technology. The Principal Software Engineer (Integrations) will serve as technical lead and hands-on builder for a multi-tenant ERP connector framework for Fleetio, a fleet maintenance SaaS platform. The initial adapters will support SAP S/4HANA Cloud and Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. The role owns the framework architecture and early technical decisions, leads three senior engineers and a QA engineer, and is accountable for the integrity of financial postings between Fleetio and customer ERPs, including avoiding duplicate postings and maintaining a complete audit trail. The Principal Engineer is the primary technical contact for Fleetio’s product, integrations, and infrastructure teams, and will transfer the framework to Fleetio’s integrations team at the end of the engagement. Nerdery is remote-friendly, with Minnesota office space available to employees who prefer working in an office or collaborative setting. Some client visits and demonstrations may be onsite.

Requirements

  • An undergraduate or graduate degree in a computer-related field, a coding bootcamp certificate, or a thorough demonstration of self-taught software development skills.
  • At least 8 years of software development experience.
  • At least 2–3 years of application software architecture experience, including familiarity with common design patterns and approaches to typical application problems.
  • Ability to write complex software and explain the reasoning behind code.
  • Strong technical communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical problems to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong understanding of the development process and ability to maintain an iterative approach throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Experience architecting and shipping production system-to-system integrations or an integration platform; web-application architecture alone is not sufficient.
  • Deep data-integrity design knowledge, including idempotency, outbox or ledger patterns, at-least-once delivery, and reconciliation.
  • Multi-tenant SaaS design experience, including tenant isolation, row-level security, per-tenant secrets, and kill switches.
  • AWS and infrastructure-as-code design responsibility, not merely usage.
  • Fluency in Python and/or TypeScript/Node, and comfort reading Ruby/Rails.
  • Experience leading a client-facing technical engagement under a hard deadline.
  • Experience designing and architecting scalable, reliable, maintainable backend systems and system-to-system integrations, with a strong understanding of distributed systems, architectural trade-offs, and production-level design decisions.
  • Hands-on experience integrating AI-assisted development tools into daily engineering workflows, including code generation, debugging, testing, refactoring, and technical problem-solving.
  • Ability to use AI development tools effectively through structured context management, clear technical specifications, prompt engineering, and iterative validation of AI-generated solutions.
  • Legally authorized to work in the country of employment without employment visa sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience or demonstrated ability to participate in client pitches.
  • Exposure to full-stack applications and coding skills outside the candidate’s specialization.
  • Experience with SAP S/4HANA APIs, including OData/SOAP, communication arrangements, or SAP Cloud SDK.
  • Experience with Dynamics 365 Business Central ERP accounting flows, such as journal entries, purchase order through goods receipt and supplier invoice, or three-way matching.
  • Experience with iPaaS platforms such as Paragon or Workato.
  • Experience designing a framework or SDK intended for reuse by another team.
  • Experience designing, building, or integrating AI-powered applications, autonomous agents, or agentic workflows using LLM APIs, AI orchestration frameworks, or related technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Own and evolve framework design, including module boundaries, adapter interface, idempotency ledger, posting matrix, Postgres-as-queue and its managed-queue upgrade path, and tenant configuration.
  • Run early technical decision spikes and document decisions about Paragon versus a standalone solution, language and SDK choices, AWS environment layout, Fleetio API gaps, and SAP journal-entry timeout recovery.
  • Gate canonical data models with Fleetio; define interim models and obtain approval if Fleetio’s models are delayed.
  • Translate accounting requirements into design and lead finance review of posting defaults with Fleetio’s SAP-literate accounting lead.
  • Build core framework code alongside the team, particularly the ledger and posting-integrity paths.
  • Sequence work across the SAP and Dynamics workstreams, manage the agreed cut order, and raise scope or capacity risks early.
  • Set engineering standards aligned with Fleetio’s quality guidelines and IaC standard, using Terraform or Pulumi.
  • Review code and set the test strategy with QA, including duplicate-posting and fault-injection tests.
  • Lead the technical side of the Fleetio kickoff demo and prepare knowledge transfer and runbooks for Fleetio’s integrations team.
  • Define how the team uses AI-assisted development within the SOW’s AI clause.
  • Provide ad-hoc technical support to other practitioners in the domain as needed.
  • Assist with sales requests by providing technical recommendations and estimates to prospective clients.
  • Participate in other duties as assigned.

Benefits

  • Two medical plan options, including an HSA-eligible option.
  • Dental and vision insurance.
  • Company-paid basic life and AD&D insurance.
  • Company-paid short-term disability and long-term disability coverage.
  • Discounted employee-paid voluntary life and AD&D, accident, critical illness, and hospital indemnity insurance.
  • Pet insurance.
  • Legal support and identity theft protection plans.
  • 401(k) plan with company match of up to 3.5% and immediate vesting.
  • Flexible time off (Flex PTO) for vacation, personal time, illness, or caring for dependents.
  • Remote-friendly workplace with Minnesota office space available.
  • Professional development resources and funding for conferences and certifications.
