Principal Ruby on Rails Engineer
About The Position
Design and implement technology solutions using modern engineering tools and Agile practices, working with self-directed, cross-functional, product-oriented teams in a collaborative environment. The role contributes to banking products and services while developing technical expertise and experience. The engineer develops and maintains Newline’s core RESTful API in Ruby on Rails, supports backend infrastructure and platform integrations, and contributes to data pipelines, business intelligence tools, security practices, testing, scaling, and optimization. The role also provides technical leadership, coaching, operational support, and guidance on maintainable and compliant solutions. All employees are accountable for managing risk, following policies and procedures, supporting positive customer experiences, and maintaining compliance with company and regulatory requirements.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant technology field, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- Eight or more years of engineering or other IT work experience relevant to the position.
- Prior experience working in a technical or team lead capacity.
- Hands-on experience with Ruby and Ruby on Rails.
- Experience with PostgreSQL and ActiveRecord.
- Experience writing unit tests in RSpec.
- Knowledge of CI/CD tools such as Jenkins.
- Ability to build and consume command-line tools.
- Experience working in an Agile software environment.
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
- Willingness to work in a highly collaborative environment.
- Solid understanding and significant experience with modern software development practices, tools, and/or hardware technologies.
- Solid understanding of IT security best practices.
- Experience designing, implementing, and supporting complex technical solutions.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code deployments using Terraform.
- Experience building high-throughput API systems at approximately 100 TPS.
- Experience shipping highly available (99.99%) enterprise B2B SaaS products.
- Experience working in a regulated financial environment.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain Newline’s core RESTful API using Ruby on Rails.
- Work with SREs to design and implement backend infrastructure using Terraform.
- Work with the QA team to write unit and integration tests.
- Participate in software architecture discussions and code reviews.
- Integrate the platform with bank core services and APIs.
- Assist in establishing data security and information security best practices.
- Participate in API platform scaling and optimization sessions.
- Develop Newline’s internal data pipeline and BI tools.
- Implement and maintain features and capabilities while improving technical product and service quality.
- Build and share technical expertise with the Agile team and other members of the organization.
- Follow industry and organizational best practices and standards, participate in communities of practice, and contribute to continuous improvement.
- Automate processes and create maintainable, supportable, and testable solutions to achieve operational excellence.
- Keep up with technology trends and innovations in relevant fields.
- Provide operational support and troubleshooting for the team’s products and services.
- Maintain appropriate controls and documentation to meet company and regulatory requirements.
- Coach, mentor, and train new or less experienced team members.
- Provide technical leadership and guidance in areas of expertise.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
