Senior Software Engineer (Ruby/Rails), MVR

Checkr•San Francisco, CA

About The Position

As a Senior Software Engineer on Checkr’s MVR team, reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will build and evolve systems that power motor vehicle record screenings and help customers make safe, fair, and fast decisions about drivers. You will lead the design and execution of reliable, scalable services across the MVR lifecycle, from ordering and retrieving records from data sources to processing, normalizing, and delivering them in customer reports. You will partner with Product, Data Supply Chain, Supply Chain Operations, and Business Operations to shape the platform’s long-term architecture and support its growth. The role includes leading complex MVR features from ideation and technical design through implementation, release, and ongoing operation; defining technical direction and architectural improvements; maintaining high-performance services that meet standards for data accuracy, security, and compliance; identifying risks in MVR data flows and leading incident response and root-cause analysis; and mentoring engineers. Checkr describes an AI-first engineering culture in which AI-assisted tools, models, and assistants are standard practice. The role is based around Checkr’s office hubs in Denver, San Francisco, Nashville, and Santiago, with an expectation to work from the office at least three days per week. A relocation stipend may be available for those willing to relocate to a hub. The stated San Francisco compensation range is $185,000–$218,000 USD in on-target earnings or base salary; ranges vary by hiring location.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience building scalable backend systems.
  • Strong proficiency in at least one modern programming language.
  • Deep understanding of relational databases, ORMs, and RESTful APIs.
  • Proven experience designing and maintaining reliable distributed systems.
  • Hands-on experience with microservices, CI/CD, and asynchronous or event-driven architectures.
  • Ability to reason about a platform end to end, weigh architectural trade-offs, and design for changing data sources, volumes, and product requirements.
  • Experience integrating with external data providers or third-party APIs and building accurate, resilient pipelines for inconsistent, delayed, or incomplete data.
  • Full-cycle ownership of work and ability to communicate technical decisions clearly to engineering and non-engineering partners.
  • Bias for action, resilience through ambiguity, urgency, and ownership of outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Lead complex MVR features through the full development lifecycle, from ideation and technical design to implementation, release, and ongoing operation.
  • Define and drive technical direction for MVR systems, identifying architectural improvements to increase reliability, reduce turnaround time, and make the platform easier to extend.
  • Partner with Data Supply Chain, Supply Chain Operations, Product, and Operations to translate data-provider realities and customer needs into scalable technical solutions.
  • Design, build, and maintain high-performance services that meet standards for data accuracy, security, and compliance.
  • Identify systemic risks across MVR data flows, lead incident response and root-cause analysis, and implement durable fixes to prevent recurrence.
  • Mentor engineers and raise standards for code quality, design reviews, and engineering practices.
  • Use AI-assisted tools, models, and assistants as part of the team’s engineering practices.

Benefits

  • Learning and development allowance.
  • Competitive cash and equity compensation, with opportunity for advancement.
  • 100% medical, dental, and vision coverage.
