About The Position

PermitFlow is an applied AI company building software for construction permitting, licensing, inspections, and project closeouts. The Principal Product Designer is the design team's most senior individual contributor, responsible for setting the vision and craft bar for complex, high-impact product areas. This is a hands-on role focused on solving challenging construction-permitting problems and improving both product quality and the work of other designers. The role defines how automation and AI appear in strategic product experiences and ensures users can understand, trust, and guide the product's output—especially when decisions have financial or regulatory consequences. The designer partners with design, product, engineering, sales, and marketing colleagues to shape product direction, evolve design systems, and create cohesive experiences as the product grows. PermitFlow is headquartered in New York City and follows a hybrid schedule with three in-office days per week. NYC-based candidates or candidates open to relocation are preferred.

Requirements

  • Include or link to a portfolio demonstrating leadership of high-craft, complex products from concept through launch, including design decisions and their impact.
  • At least 10 years designing dense B2B software, with deep experience in workflow-heavy products and complex problem spaces.
  • Demonstrated ability to elevate other designers' work, define quality standards, and bring structure to ambiguous problem spaces.
  • Strong systems thinking and exceptional interaction and visual design craft.
  • Experience designing AI-powered or highly technical products, or a clear point of view on making AI legible, trustworthy, and controllable for users.
  • High tolerance for ambiguity and ability to thrive in fast-changing design, product, and engineering processes while helping improve them.
  • Excellent communication and storytelling skills, including articulating design rationale and building alignment among designers, engineers, executives, and customers.
  • Technical fluency and ability to partner deeply with engineers on implementation realities.
  • Comfort with Figma, Notion, Linear, or similar tools.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on comfort with code.
  • Experience making tooling recommendations to leadership as new models and solutions become available.

Responsibilities

  • Own the design vision for high-impact product areas, from problem framing through pixel-perfect execution.
  • Set strategic direction for permitting workflows, automation, and AI-assisted decisions so users can understand, trust, and guide the product's output.
  • Partner with the Head of Design and product and engineering leadership to shape the roadmap and advocate for a well-reasoned product direction.
  • Raise the craft bar across the design team by modeling exceptional work, strengthening critique culture, and mentoring designers without managing them.
  • Evolve the design language and systems thinking needed to deliver cohesive, scalable experiences as the product grows.
  • Balance detailed execution with big-picture direction while maintaining quality and pace.
  • Develop expertise in construction permitting, licensing, and inspections, approaching the domain with curiosity.
  • Collaborate with sales and marketing on collateral and branding as needed.
