About The Position

PermitFlow is an applied AI company building products for construction permitting, licensing, inspections, and project closeouts. The Principal Product Designer is the most senior individual contributor on the design team, responsible for setting the vision and craft bar for complex, high-impact product surfaces. This is a hands-on role focused on solving challenging construction-permitting problems and influencing both product quality and the work of other designers. The designer will define how automation and AI appear in strategic product experiences while ensuring users can understand, trust, and control product outputs in decisions with significant financial and regulatory consequences. The role partners with design, product, engineering, sales, and marketing, and helps shape the roadmap, design language, and systems as the product grows. The position is based in a hybrid work environment at PermitFlow's New York City headquarters, with three in-office days per week. NYC-based candidates or candidates open to relocation are preferred.

Requirements

  • Link to or include a portfolio demonstrating leadership of high-craft, complex products from concept through launch, including design decisions and their impact.
  • 10+ years designing dense B2B software, with deep experience in workflow-heavy products and complex problem spaces.
  • Demonstrated ability to elevate other designers' work, define quality standards, and bring structure to undefined problem spaces.
  • Strong systems thinking and exceptional interaction and visual design craft.
  • Experience designing AI-powered or highly technical products, or a clear point of view on making AI legible, trustworthy, and controllable for users.
  • High tolerance for ambiguity and ability to thrive in fast-changing design, product, and engineering processes.
  • Excellent communication and storytelling skills, including articulating design rationale and building alignment with designers, engineers, executives, and customers.
  • Technical fluency and ability to partner deeply with engineers on implementation realities.
  • Comfort with Figma, Notion, Linear, or similar tools, and ability to recommend tools to leadership.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on comfort with code.
  • Experience in the pre-construction industry; the posting notes that this may be a first-time industry for the candidate.

Responsibilities

  • Own the design vision for high-impact product areas, from problem framing through pixel-perfect execution.
  • Set strategic direction for permitting workflows, automation, and AI-assisted decisions so users can understand, trust, and guide product outputs.
  • Partner with the Head of Design and product and engineering leadership to shape the roadmap and provide a reasoned point of view on product direction.
  • Raise the craft bar across the design team by modeling exceptional work, strengthening critique culture, and mentoring designers without managing them.
  • Evolve the design language and systems thinking that enable cohesive, scalable experiences as the product grows.
  • Balance detailed execution with broad direction while maintaining a high quality bar and pace of execution.
  • Develop expertise in construction permitting, licensing, and inspections, approaching the industry with curiosity.
  • Collaborate with sales and marketing on collateral and branding as needed.
