The Principal Product Designer is the most senior design role in the product organization, responsible for the strategy and execution of complex, high-impact product initiatives. The role works at the intersection of product vision, engineering constraints, and customer needs, solving ambiguous problems that shape the platform. The designer defines strategy for a product pillar and influences decisions across multiple teams. Depending on experience and organizational needs, the role may be a strategic individual contributor or include managing and mentoring a small team of senior designers. The position owns long-term UX vision and the end-to-end design lifecycle for challenging product areas, with a focus on scalable, accessible, measurable solutions. It influences stakeholders across Product, Engineering, Data Science, and executive leadership; leads and contributes to the Design System; and partners with Research and Data teams to turn qualitative and quantitative insights into design hypotheses and measure impact. On the management track, the role also hires, mentors, and coaches senior and staff-level designers and oversees their projects at a strategic level.
