Principal Mechanical Design Engineer - Data Center Infrastructure (REMOTE)

Jabil•Austin, TX
•$132,400 - $238,400•Remote

About The Position

The Principal Mechanical Integration Engineer is a technical leader responsible for the architecture, integration, and validation of advanced mechanical systems for hyperscale data center environments. The role requires expertise in single-phase and two-phase liquid cooling, hydronic system design, structural integration, and manufacturable rack-level infrastructure solutions. The engineer defines system performance requirements, develops technical specifications, selects and integrates critical components, and leads mechanical design from concept through production release. The work includes wetted material selection, thermal and structural analysis, fastening strategies, component layout, design for manufacturability, and cross-functional collaboration to deliver reliable, scalable, and cost-effective data center infrastructure. The position is remote or based in Austin, Texas, and requires up to 25% domestic and/or international travel (rare).

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an accredited university.
  • At least 8 years of experience in mechanical design and integration of mission-critical systems.
  • Proven track record of successful system designs and implementations in a relevant industry.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, integration strategy, and system coordination.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with industry standards and regulations related to Energy Storage Systems and Data Center Infrastructure.
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Hands-on experience designing liquid cooling systems for modular or prefabricated data center deployments, including factory acceptance testing (FAT) and site integration.

Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end mechanical design and engineering of hyperscale data center infrastructure, including liquid-cooled rack assemblies, CDUs, manifolds, enclosures, structural frames, and hydronic piping systems.
  • Serve as technical authority for single-phase and two-phase liquid cooling architectures, including primary and secondary loops, in-rack distribution, and system integration.
  • Define and validate performance requirements for liquid-cooled infrastructure, including pressure ratings, hydrostatic limits, temperature ranges, flow rates and uniformity, thermal expansion, durability, and serviceability.
  • Design, analyze, and validate machined components, welded fabrications, manifolds, and structural systems using stress analysis, finite element analysis, flow modeling, and structural load calculations.
  • Lead wetted-material selection and compatibility analysis, including corrosion mitigation, surface treatments, cleanliness standards, and durability.
  • Develop and review CAD models and technical data packages using CREO, SolidWorks, or equivalent tools, ensuring design accuracy, manufacturability, and system integration.
  • Author and approve technical specifications for piping systems, rack-level cooling infrastructure, and hydronic components, including installation, maintenance, testing, and applicable standards.
  • Establish and oversee validation protocols for hydrostatic pressure testing, leak detection and mitigation, flow resistance analysis, and corrosion verification.
  • Evaluate customer design proposals and technical specifications for feasibility, manufacturability, cost, and risk, and recommend ways to optimize performance and total cost of ownership.
  • Lead cross-functional design reviews with electrical, thermal, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams.
  • Optimize rack manifold design and manufacturing processes, including machining, welding, surface finishing, connection interfaces, venting and draining, and flow paths.
  • Improve manufacturing assembly methods and tooling with production teams and equipment vendors to improve quality, scalability, and cost efficiency.
  • Lead root cause investigations into complex mechanical failures found during validation or field deployment and implement corrective design improvements.
  • Provide technical leadership in vendor qualification and management for mechanical components and liquid cooling subsystems.
  • Identify and mitigate technical risks affecting performance, schedule, or cost, and contribute to R&D initiatives in liquid cooling technologies.
  • Apply modular data center design principles to create standardized, repeatable mechanical packages that can be factory-built, tested, and validated before shipment.
  • Design cooling systems for prefabricated and skid-mounted deployment, accounting for transport and vibration loads, shipping envelope constraints, and inter-module connection interfaces.
