About The Position

Avantos AI is hiring a Principal Designer to own its design system end-to-end and lead design for the Agent Portal, its most-trafficked product surface. This is a senior individual-contributor craft role, not a people-management position. The Principal Designer will establish and scale the design quality bar through shared systems, patterns, and tenets, and help shape how design works at Avantos as its processes and capabilities evolve. The role emphasizes judgment, taste, and maintaining high-quality design as the team and product scale.

The Principal Designer will partner with the Head of Design to define design tenets, develop other designers through critique and mentorship, and represent design in cross-functional product and client discussions. Avantos describes its platform as an AI-native operating system for financial services that consolidates fragmented data, automates complex processes, and embeds intelligent decision-making across the client lifecycle.

Requirements

• 8+ years of product design experience, with craft leadership that has raised the bar beyond the candidate's own projects.
• Deep expertise in interaction design, information architecture, visual craft, and systems thinking.
• A track record of authoring design systems, tenets, or patterns adopted and built upon by other designers.
• Mastery of Figma and judgment in evolving a design system as a living set of patterns.
• Fluency in prototyping in appropriate mediums, increasingly including code and AI tools.
• Genuine curiosity about how AI is changing design, software, and team practices.
• Comfort operating as a senior individual contributor and craft anchor without requiring a manager title.
• Fluency in B2B SaaS or fintech complexity; financial services experience is welcome but not required.

Nice To Haves

• Experience designing AI-native or agentic products, particularly making probabilistic, non-deterministic output trustworthy and legible.
• A track record of building personal tools with AI to work faster or raise quality.
• Familiarity with thinkers such as Bret Victor, Lou Downe, or Bob Baxley, and a point of view on the intersection of craft and systems.
• Experience as one of the first senior individual-contributor design hires at a Series A or B company.

Responsibilities

• Own the Avantos design system end-to-end, including the component library, design tokens, pattern language, and contribution rubric.
• Set craft direction across the design team through shared systems, patterns, and tenets.
• Lead design on the Agent Portal, the company's most-trafficked surface, where the design system is first deployed and pressure-tested.
• Author and evolve design tenets in partnership with the Head of Design.
• Develop designers through critique, mentorship, and modeling rationale-driven thinking.
• Represent design in cross-functional product and client conversations requiring senior craft judgment.
