Principal Antenna/RF Front End Design Engineer

RTX•Columbia, MD
•$118,300 - $224,900•Onsite

About The Position

RTX BBN Technologies is seeking an RF and Antenna Design Engineer to work with scientists implementing RF systems in support of cutting-edge research. BBN develops networked sensor system solutions by combining expertise in physics, modeling and simulation, signal processing, electromagnetic and RF phenomenology, computer science, and system development to rapidly move designs from theory to demonstration. The engineer will work across the RF chain between the digital domain and the air, including antennas, matching networks, feedlines, filters, low-noise and power amplifiers, signal distribution, and switching. Systems span HF through millimeter-wave frequencies and power levels from milliwatts to megawatts, and may be used in laboratories, field tests, or autonomous operation. The work involves finding low-risk, repeatable solutions with adequate margins for research needs, using either custom hardware or commercial off-the-shelf components. Projects vary. The role requires routine onsite presence at the Arlington, Virginia, or Columbia, Maryland, office. Candidates must be U.S. citizens and already hold an active DoD TS/SCI clearance on the first day. The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance is also stated as a requirement. Some overnight travel may be required.

Requirements

  • A degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) is typically required.
  • A minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience is typically required.
  • Experience with antenna system design, modeling, prototyping, and deployment.
  • Experience with RF front-end design, including LNA, PA, gain control, filters, and RF distribution.
  • Experience with system design, cascade analysis, link budgets, and control interfaces.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required.
  • An active and existing DoD TS/SCI security clearance is required after day one.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience applying advanced methods, theories, and R&D techniques to difficult problems.
  • Ability to proactively tackle research challenges with minimal supervision and periodic check-ins with team leads.
  • Experience documenting designs and scientific findings and presenting them to government customers.
  • Hands-on experience building RF systems and antennas, performing verification testing, and fielding hardware.
  • Proposal-support experience preparing cost estimates, bills of materials, technical descriptions, schedules, and labor estimates.
  • Willingness to undertake some overnight travel.

Responsibilities

  • Design, model, prototype, and deploy antenna systems.
  • Design RF front ends, including low-noise amplifiers, power amplifiers, gain control, filters, and RF distribution.
  • Design RF systems, perform cascade analysis and link-budget work, and address control interfaces.
  • Work with scientists to implement RF systems supporting research.
  • Build RF systems and antennas, verify and test them, and field hardware.
  • Document designs and scientific findings, with opportunities to present to government customers.
  • Support proposals by preparing cost estimates, bills of materials, technical descriptions, schedules, and labor estimates.
