About The Position

We are looking for a Press Officer (m/f/d) for the Communication department as soon as possible. This is a 50% position limited until May 31, 2028. The salary group corresponds to 13 TV-AVH (comparable to TVöD-VKA). The German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) / Leibniz Institute for Global and Area Studies is an independent social science research institute based in Hamburg. It analyzes political, social, and economic developments in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East to answer questions of local and global significance. It combines region-specific analyses with innovative comparative research on accountability and participation, globalization and development, peace and security, and global order and foreign policy.

Requirements

• Completed university degree, preferably in communication, media, political, social, or regional sciences, or a comparable field.
• Several years of experience in press relations, science communication, journalism, or media work, ideally in a scientific environment.
• A strong understanding of journalistic working methods, news values, and current societal and scientific policy debates.
• Very good editorial skills and the ability to present complex research topics clearly, concisely, and in a media-friendly manner.
• Proficient use of digital communication channels and relevant experience with content management systems and media monitoring.
• Very good German and English language skills, both written and spoken.
• Organizational talent, initiative, teamwork skills, and an interest in international social science research.

Responsibilities

• Building journalist networks and media partnerships for targeted placement of GIGA researchers and their topics in leading media, as well as expanding the institute's press distribution lists to strengthen GIGA's presence in national and international media.
• Identifying topics relevant to the institute's target audiences and preparing complex scientific research results in a media-friendly manner.
• Creating press releases and editorial content for the GIGA website.
• Creating tailored press distribution lists for sending out press invitations and information.
• Facilitating GIGA's scientific staff for media inquiries and supporting them in preparing for interviews.
• Contributing to existing science communication formats and introducing new formats tailored to the media and the public.
• Media monitoring, analysis of own campaigns and press mailings.
