About The Position

As part of a multidisciplinary team, the Preschool Educator develops and implements appropriate developmental activities for children attending CHEO Preschool. This role involves individual care management and facilitating medical procedures, such as medication administration, adhering to acceptable professional standards defined by CHEO and the CCEYA (Child Care and Early Years Act). Requirements

  • Recognized Early Childhood Education diploma or equivalency (Essential)
  • Registration in Good Standing with the College of Early Childhood Educators (Essential)
  • Minimum of two (2) years of post-graduate experience recent and related to young children with special needs (Essential)
  • Strong communication and organizational skills with the ability to function effectively within a multidisciplinary team (Essential)
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle (Essential)
  • Current First Aid and CPR Certification (Essential)
  • Vulnerable Sector Check (Essential)
  • Fully vaccinated against COVID-19

Responsibilities

  • Develop individual program objectives for the assigned caseload in coordination with the multidisciplinary preschool team, parents, and the Preschool Educator Team Lead/Manager.
  • Implement established activity plans and classroom routines.
  • Observe, monitor, and communicate progress and/or concerns to the Preschool Educator Team Lead/Manager and the preschool team.
  • Observe, monitor, and communicate progress and/or concerns to families and collaborate with them to problem-solve.
  • Document observations of children on caseload in the form of progress notes.
  • Create individual Early Learning Plans for all children on caseload.
  • Participate in the creation of Careplans.
  • Attend staff, team, and case conference meetings.
  • Supervise E.C.E. students on placement in the preschool program in consultation with the Preschool Educator Team Lead/Manager.
  • Provide direction for volunteers assigned to the preschool program in consultation with the Preschool Educator Team Lead/Manager.
  • Assume support responsibilities, including washing dishes and toys, and cleaning tables and equipment as required.
  • Provide care management for children on assigned caseload, including clothing and diaper changes, oral feeding, lifting, and positioning.
  • Facilitate medical procedures, including seizure management, anaphylaxis, and administration and documentation of oral medication.
  • Complete required documentation and data for statistical reporting to the ministry.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with organizational policies and procedures related to privacy.
  • Follow organizational policies and procedures related to safety, including reporting and follow-up for incidents/accidents and near misses, risk management, and emergency procedures (e.g., medication administration, seizure management, anaphylaxis, EpiPen use, calling CHEO emergency codes).
  • Follow routine precautions for infection prevention and control, including proper hand hygiene.
  • Participate in education and improvement activities related to safety.
  • Follow standards of practice for the profession regarding safe application of assessment protocols, therapeutic techniques, and direct client handling.
  • Receive training in the safe and effective use of equipment, ensure equipment is clean and in proper working order, and report any equipment needing repair or maintenance.
  • Educate clients and their families about their role in promoting safety.
  • Receive training and maintain current knowledge of CPR and/or First Aid in accordance with organizational policies and procedures.
