About The Position

CHEO hosts several provincial programs including Newborn Screening Ontario (NSO). NSO oversees and coordinates dried blood spot screening for several rare diseases, pulse oximetry screening for critical congenital heart disease, hearing loss risk factor screening and parent-led biliary atresia screening across the province. Newborn Screening Ontario is seeking a data analyst to support its expanding responsibilities in program oversight and in enhancing system interfaces that enable results sharing with downstream partners and agencies. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in healthcare data analytics and be familiar with statistical analysis methods, database programming, and data visualization tools. The Data Analyst is responsible for the extraction of data from the Newborn Screening Ontario (NSO) information systems and preparation/presentation of those data in different formats (tables, graphs, reports, slides). The analyst provides ongoing support to the IHP Oversight Agency to support continuous quality improvement and program evaluation activities. This involves the development, creation and maintenance of project and analysis related documentation, supporting the improvement of analysis processes, and participation in ongoing professional development activities.

Requirements

  • Criminal Record Check (Essential)
  • University Degree in epidemiology, science, statistics, epidemiology, or a related field (Essential)
  • Proficient in using data management software and statistical analysis languages such as R, as well as other relevant statistical and programming tools (Essential)
  • Experience working with relational databases and SQL (Essential)
  • Minimum 3 year’s experience working in an analysis position (Essential)
  • Experience with calculation of basic epidemiologic measures (i.e., rates, risks, rate/risk ratios, 95% confidence intervals) (Essential)
  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office, especially Excel) (Essential)
  • Excellent attention to detail (Essential)
  • Knowledge of ethics, privacy and regulatory requirements of research involving human subjects. (Essential)
  • Ability to prioritize with good time management skills (Essential)
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken. Ability to read, write, speak and understand English required. (Essential)

Nice To Haves

  • Clinical health research experience (maternal-child preferred) (Preferred)
  • Experience with business intelligence reporting software (e.g. PowerBI, Tableau) (Preferred)
  • Experience with health system integrations and associated messages standards (e.g. HL7, FHIR, API’s) (Preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with team members, aggregate and record-level data requestors and researchers (as required) to clarify data elements needed for data requests and research
  • Write analysis queries and programs to perform data processing tasks, perform data extraction and conduct analyses
  • Write, format and maintain reports in NSO’s Laboratory Information System and other relevant sources
  • Test written programs and verify data analyses against other data reports
  • Interact with other project team members to ensure that data is complete, accurate, and in compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Assist or develop systems for organizing data to analyze, identify and report trends.
  • Prepare data output formats as requested.
  • Maintain records of analysis activities, and prepare periodic and ad hoc reports, as required
  • Match/link/aggregate data from multiple sources
  • Make decisions about appropriate statistical tests as required and run statistical analyses
  • Execute data validation programs and resolve data discrepancies
  • Ensure accurate and detailed documentation concerning how and why analysis decisions are made throughout the course of a project
  • Perform work in accordance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and all CHEO and CHEO Research Institute corporate/departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety.
