About The Position

The CHEO librarian supports evidence-based practice in patient care, health education and clinical research by delivering various library and information services to a wide range of hospital staff (clinical, non-clinical, medical, and learners) with varying levels of expertise.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in library and information studies (MLIS) or (MLS) from an American-Library Association (ALA) accredited University (Essential)
  • Two (2) years prior related experience (Essential)
  • Experience with electronic library materials (Essential)
  • Demonstrated technical and specialized knowledge of relevant databases, e-journals, e-books, and operating systems (e.g.: Workday, M365). (Essential)
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge of conducting scoping reviews, and associated software (e.g., Covidence, Distiller SR, Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology, Open Science Framework). (Essential)
  • Demonstrated strong communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills. (Essential)
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiatives and prioritize work. (Essential)
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and paying attention to detail. (Essential)
  • Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with internal and external clients. (Essential)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of freedom of information legislation processes. (Essential)
  • Demonstrated strong computer troubleshooting skills. (Essential)
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge of computer searching to evaluate electronic resources and provide reference service. (Essential)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of health science bibliographic resources and their use. (Essential)
  • Demonstrated understanding of Canadian copyright laws for academic institutions. (Essential)
  • Demonstrated flexible approach to work demands. (Essential)
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of applicable occupational health and safety legislation; general knowledge of corporate/departmental policies and procedures related to health and safety. (Essential)

Responsibilities

  • Act as the main point of contact for CHEO’s membership/partnership with consortiums (e.g.: the Health Science Information Consortium (HSIC)) and academic health science libraries.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with electronic library vendors, coordinate and review vendor invoices, and work closely with administrative and accounts payable teams to ensure accurate and timely payment processing.
  • Provide operational oversight of the library program, including monitoring expenditures.
  • Work with directors across CHEO and CHEO Research Institute to track spending against the approved budget to support overall financial stewardship.
  • Provide support on CHEO’s various health science databases (e.g., MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsychInfo) and journal subscriptions (e.g., JAMA, NEJM).
  • Coordinate and manage databases, e-journals, e-books, and systems access to library resources in collaboration with Information Services and Communications.
  • Process interlibrary loan requests using Docline.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance on building effective search strategies to hospital employees with varying levels of expertise.
  • Complete peer reviews for search strategies (PRESS).
  • Manage access to Distiller SR software.
  • Develop and facilitate training sessions on information research skills and navigation/use of databases to a wide range of hospital employees with varying levels of expertise.
  • Collaborate on innovative initiatives that support the organization’s strategic operations.
  • Collect and collate data on library tools/services usage.
  • Identify, collect, and prepare reports on key performance indicators for Library Services.
  • Promote and deliver library services and resources in a virtual work environment.
  • Promote and deliver research services and resources at the CHEO Research Institute.
  • Keep up-to-date with new trends and best practices.
  • Perform work in accordance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and all CHEO corporate/departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Supervise library technician student role.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
