About The Position

The Post Graduate Archival Assistant is a 12-month provisional position that reports to the head archivist and assists with essential duties, including arranging, describing, and digitizing archival materials. This position is governed by state and federal laws, and agency/institution policy.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Public History
  • New professional in first post-graduate year
  • Experience with and/or knowledge about the collections of the Center for Arkansas History and Culture
  • Knowledge of classification and archival requirements of historical documents and objects
  • Knowledge of historical events and their causes, indicators, and effects on civilization and cultures
  • Knowledge of the history of the United States and of the State of Arkansas
  • Knowledge of the collections of the Center for Arkansas History and Culture
  • Knowledge of archival inventories
  • Ability to sort, organize, analyze, and search archival collections and inventories
  • Ability to prepare and present oral and written information and reports
  • Ability to clean, restore, and repair documents
  • Proof of legal authority to work in the United States on the first day of employment

Responsibilities

  • Assist in arranging and describing archival collections (documents, photographs, audio-visual materials, etc.)
  • Create detailed finding aids to help users locate materials
  • Maintain and update databases for archival materials
  • Provide research support to staff, researchers, and the public by retrieving requested materials
  • Staff research desk, including an occasional Saturday
  • Digitize physical materials and write metadata according to institutional standards
  • Monitor access to sensitive or restricted materials, ensuring compliance with privacy and security protocols
  • Assist in preparing and repairing damaged items under the guidance of senior archivists
  • Supervise interns, student workers, and graduate assistants on special projects in coordination with the head archivist
  • Assist with accessioning and maintaining records of acquisitions
  • Work with other archivists, staff, and external stakeholders on projects and initiatives
  • Participate in community outreach activities
  • Attend meetings and contribute to ongoing collection management strategies
  • Support digital scholarship initiatives and collection accessibility
  • Participate in training sessions and workshops to improve skills and knowledge related to archival work
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
