About The Position

Performs and provides direct supervision, support, and backup of police and security officers in routine patrol, directed patrol, community policing, and special event activities. Reviews and assists officers as necessary on incident reports, accident reports and any other such reports prepared by officers on a daily basis. Ensures accuracy of all information on reports. Prepares routine and special reports as necessary. Submits reports to the appropriate supervisor for final review and approval. May train new police officers and evaluate as outlined in the Field Training Program. May be assigned as sergeant of specialized areas including, but not limited to, investigations, training, community relations, and special. Patrol sergeant assignments are based on a 14 day schedule. Administrative sergeant assignments are based on a 7 day schedule.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid TN driver’s license
  • TN P.O.S.T. Certification
  • Minimum 3 years commissioned law enforcement preferably in a college campus environment
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without need now or in the future for sponsorship for employment-based visa status.
  • Ability to analyze situation quickly and to determine proper course of action.
  • Ability to comprehend and carry out directives.
  • Ability to successfully complete required annual in service training.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares routine and special reports as necessary.
  • Submits reports to the appropriate supervisor for final review and approval.
  • May train new police officers and evaluate as outlined in the Field Training Program.
  • Assess performance, appearance, and conduct of subordinates.
  • Receives and relays directives, assignments, and special orders to subordinates.
  • Develops and administers training programs.
  • May be required to perform direct law enforcement activities, including preventing or suppressing crime and making arrests.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Confers with university administrators, faculty, staff and students; and other law enforcement, court and governmental officials on matters of mutual interest.
