About The Position

The Police Sergeant in this supervisory role is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of officers within the department. The sergeant will supervise, lead, and mentor officers, ensuring that they perform their duties effectively, in line with department policies, and in a manner that enhances public safety. This role involves overseeing the efficient and proper response to emergency situations, ensuring officer compliance with regulations, and fostering community engagement. The ideal candidate will have excellent leadership, communication, and decision-making skills, along with a solid understanding of law enforcement procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (college degree preferred)
  • Active Texas Peace Officer License (TCOLE)
  • Must possess an Intermediate TCOLE certification or higher
  • Valid Texas driver's license with a clean driving record
  • Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required
  • No written or higher disciplinary action within the last 12 months of this job posting.
  • Thorough understanding of federal, state, and local laws, including criminal procedures, traffic laws, and constitutional rights.
  • Proficiency in police procedures, protocols, and standards governing law enforcement activities.
  • Strong understanding of investigative techniques, evidence handling, and case management.
  • Ability to evaluate complex situations and make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to interact effectively with officers, community members, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to lead and mentor a team of officers, maintaining morale and fostering professional development.
  • Knowledge of community policing principles and the ability to build trust and rapport with community members.
  • Capability to manage conflicts, de-escalate tense situations, and resolve disputes in a calm and effective manner.
  • Ability to assess risks and prioritize tasks to ensure the safety of officers and the public.
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues, work cohesively as part of a team, and support shared goals and objectives.

  • Additional training or certifications in areas such as crisis intervention, community policing, or de-escalation techniques, etc.
  • Minimum of 2 years of law enforcement experience.

Responsibilities

  • Regularly patrol assigned areas on foot or by vehicle to deter and detect criminal activity, respond to calls for service, and provide a visible police presence.
  • Supervise and lead officers, ensuring effective performance and adherence to departmental policies and procedures.
  • Monitor activities to ensure compliance with laws and regulations while providing guidance and support to officers.
  • Oversee the scheduling and assignment of shifts, ensuring that adequate coverage is provided at all times.
  • Respond to critical incidents and emergencies, providing direction and assistance as needed.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations for officers and provide constructive feedback and training to enhance their skills and effectiveness.
  • Review reports, incident documentation, and arrest records for accuracy and completeness, ensuring all incidents are documented properly.
  • Address and resolve issues related to officer conduct, performance, and discipline.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other law enforcement agencies and departments to ensure a unified approach to public safety.
  • Participate in community outreach and public relations activities to foster positive relationships between the police department and the community.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of department-wide initiatives and policies.
  • Provide leadership in situations requiring specialized knowledge, such as high-risk incidents or investigations.
  • Maintain and oversee inventory and proper use of equipment, ensuring that officers have the necessary tools to perform their duties.
