About The Position

The Southeastern Louisiana University's Police Department invites applications for the position of Police Sergeant. This position supervises one of our uniform patrol shifts that includes Police Officer 1, Police Officer 2, Police Officer 3, and a Communications Officer. The schedule for this shift is 5am-5pm or 5pm-5am, with rotating days off/on, depending on assignment. The incumbent reports to the Police Lieutenant - Uniform Patrol.

Requirements

  • Three years of law enforcement experience.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Possession of a current Louisiana driver's license.
  • Possession of an active Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification may be required at the time of application.
  • An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.
  • May be required to qualify annually with a firearm.
  • For some positions, applicant must be eligible for bond.
  • All classified jobs in State service with police officer and wildlife enforcement titles qualify as law enforcement.
  • Jobs outside State service that will qualify as law enforcement are those performed while commissioned with the power of arrest.
  • Military police in the armed services are law enforcement; security/guard duty is NOT qualifying.
  • Any college hours or degree must be from a school accredited by one of the following regional accrediting bodies: the Middle States Commission on Higher Education; the New England Association of Schools and Colleges; the Higher Learning Commission; the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities; the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
  • Applicants must have a current Civil Service test score for 2100-PSE-Protective Services Exam for Law Enforcement in order to be considered for this vacancy unless exempted by Civil Service rule or policy.
  • Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to be certified through the Southeastern Defensive Driving Course.

Nice To Haves

  • Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will substitute for one year of the required experience. The maximum substitution allowed is 60 semester hours which substitutes for two years of experience.
