About The Position

This is a statewide departmental promotional examination for the position of Police Sergeant (1YP). Candidates must be employees in specific Massachusetts Police Departments with permanent civil service status in eligible titles and have at least one year of service in that title by the examination date. The examination will assess technical knowledge, situational judgment, and experience/education. The resulting eligible list will be valid for a period determined by the administrator, not exceeding two years unless otherwise specified by law or policy.

Requirements

• Be an employee in one of the specified Massachusetts Police Departments (Acushnet, Middleborough, Stoneham, Wakefield, Wareham) with permanent civil service status in the eligible title(s) by the date of the examination.
• Have served in the force at least one year since appointment and performed the job duties of the eligible title(s) by the date of the examination.
• A combination of temporary and permanent service from a certification can be applied towards meeting this one year requirement.
• Complete the online application and pay the $150 examination processing fee by the application deadline.
• Maintain accurate contact information.
• Submit original supporting documentation during the HRD review process or during the life of the eligible list if authenticity is questioned.
• If needing reasonable accommodations, fill out the Testing Accommodations Request Form and submit supporting documentation to [email protected] no later than four weeks prior to the exam date.
• If requesting a makeup examination due to an emergency or unanticipated hardship, file a written request with verifiable documentation to HRD no later than seven calendar days from the original written examination date.

Nice To Haves

• Candidates with an existing Civil Service Online Account should not create a new one.
• Consider the examination date carefully before applying, as makeup examinations are generally not granted except for current military personnel or in cases of emergency/unanticipated hardship with proper documentation.
• Candidates approved for an examination fee voucher should record its redemption on the application.

• To claim Promotional Preference for 25 years of service, candidates must claim this preference in the E&E Claim application and verify eligibility on the Employment Verification form.

Responsibilities

• Under supervision, to perform the duties of a Police Sergeant in conformance with the rules and regulations of the Police Department.
• To perform all duties assigned by a higher rank up to the Chief of Police in every phase of police work.
• To perform related work as required.

Benefits

• Statutory Preference Points: Two points will be added to the passing score for qualified Veterans, Disabled Veterans, or individuals with 25 years of service as a member of a regular municipal police force in Massachusetts who have passed an examination for promotional appointment.
