About The Position

This is a statewide departmental promotional examination for Police Lieutenant (1YP-3232). Candidates must be employees in one of the specified Massachusetts Police Departments with permanent civil service status in the eligible title(s) by the examination date and have served at least one year in that role. Police Officers must have one year of permanent experience after completing their police academy course. The examination will consist of several components, including Technical Knowledge, Situational Judgment, Assessment Center, and Experience & Education. The resulting eligible list will be valid for up to two years. The examination is scheduled for September 14, 2026, with applications open from June 1, 2026, and closing on July 7, 2026. A processing fee of $150 is required. The department is encouraging applications from women, minorities, veterans, and people with disabilities.

Requirements

Be an employee in one of the specified Massachusetts Police Departments.
Have permanent civil service status in the specified eligible title(s) by the date of the examination.
Have served in the force at least one year since appointment and performed the job duties of the eligible title(s). A combination of temporary and permanent service can be applied.
Police Officers must have one year of permanent experience after completion of their police academy course.
Service as a Student Officer, before successful completion of an approved academy, does not count towards meeting the eligibility requirement.
Complete the online application and pay the examination processing fee by the deadline.

Make original supporting documentation available upon request during the HRD review process or during the life of the eligible list.

Nice To Haves

Qualified Veterans and Disabled Veterans may receive two points added to their passing score upon submission of written proof.
Individuals with 25 years of service as a member of a regular municipal police force in Massachusetts and who have passed an examination for promotional appointment may receive two points added to their passing score upon submission of written proof.

Responsibilities

Under supervision, to perform the duties of a Police Lieutenant in conformance with the rules and regulations of the Police Department.
To perform all duties assigned by a higher rank up to the Chief of Police in every phase of police work.
To perform related work as required.
