About The Position

This is a statewide departmental promotional examination for the position of Police Lieutenant (1YP). Candidates must be employees in one of the specified Massachusetts Police Departments with permanent civil service status in an eligible title and have at least one year of service in that title by the examination date. The examination will assess knowledge of constitutional law, Massachusetts General Laws, police procedures, community policing, and supervision. It will also evaluate judgment, decision-making, accountability, adaptability, leadership, and interpersonal skills.

Requirements

• Be an employee in one of the participating Massachusetts Police Departments.
• Have permanent civil service status in an eligible title by the date of the examination.
• Have served in the force at least one year since appointment and performed the job duties of the eligible title(s) by the examination date.
• Police Officers must have one year of permanent experience after completion of their police academy course.
• Service as a Student Officer, before successful completion of an approved academy, does not count towards meeting the eligibility requirement.

Nice To Haves

• Individuals placed on the resulting eligible list shall be eligible for certification from such list for such period as the administrator shall determine, but in any event not to exceed two years, unless otherwise outlined in Massachusetts General Law (MGL) Chapter 31, § 25 or the Human Resources Division (HRD) revocation policy.

Responsibilities

• Perform the duties of a Police Lieutenant in conformance with the rules and regulations of the Police Department.
• Perform all duties assigned by a higher rank up to the Chief of Police in every phase of police work.
• Perform related work as required.

Benefits

• Statutory Preference Points: Two points will be added to the passing score for qualified Veterans, Disabled Veterans, or individuals with 25 years of service as a member of a regular municipal police force in Massachusetts who have passed an examination for promotional appointment.
